There is no official evidence that removing Firefox’s titlebar gradient universally improves or harms accessibility or readability. The result depends on which interface surface you mean, your Firefox theme, operating-system settings, and version. A browser-frame change does not, by itself, change the contrast of webpage text.
First, identify the surface with the gradient
“Titlebar gradient” can mean the window frame, tab strip, or toolbar. These are parts of Firefox’s browser interface, also called browser chrome; they are separate from the webpage displayed inside the browser. Mozilla’s documentation distinguishes chrome color behavior from web-content color behavior, so a change to the browser frame should not be treated as a fix for low-contrast text on websites. Mozilla’s high-contrast documentation explains this distinction.
Firefox themes can style interface backgrounds and gradients, but Mozilla’s documentation does not establish a universal user-facing switch that removes every titlebar gradient. The available appearance can depend on the theme and platform. The Nova theme guidance recommends considering frame and background colors together. The MDN theme reference includes gradient and background properties, with an example for Firefox 156 and later that confines a gradient to the top toolbars.
What accessibility evidence says—and does not say
Mozilla’s June 2026 design article identifies contrast, readability, focus states, keyboard behavior, target sizes, system settings, and visual comfort as accessibility considerations. It does not report a test showing that removing a particular Firefox gradient improves or worsens accessibility. No gradient-specific numerical result is established in the cited official material. Mozilla’s article on the Firefox design provides general design context, not a verdict on this one visual treatment.

That means the practical question is whether the resulting interface is easier for you to use. A gradient might make surfaces easier to distinguish for one person, while a flatter color may be more comfortable for another. Check whether controls, tabs, and interface boundaries remain easy to identify after a theme change; this is a personal evaluation, not a proven universal effect.
Use the setting that matches the problem
If webpage text is hard to read
Firefox’s Contrast Control is the relevant built-in setting for web-content contrast. Mozilla Support describes three choices: Automatic (use system settings), Off, and Custom. The feature is available in Firefox 138 and later; its location or behavior may change in later releases. See Make reading easier with Firefox’s contrast control settings. This setting concerns webpage content, not a titlebar gradient.

If browser controls or the frame are hard to distinguish
Check the selected Firefox theme and your operating system’s contrast or high-contrast settings. Mozilla documents that platform high-contrast settings and theme selection can affect chrome colors. On Windows, Firefox detects High Contrast themes and applies the high-contrast color scheme to interface elements as well as webpages. See Mozilla Support’s overview of Firefox accessibility features.

A practical way to assess the change
- Locate the gradient. Decide whether it is on the window frame, tab strip, toolbar, or webpage. The first three are browser chrome; webpage text is content.
- Note your Firefox version and theme. Theme options and behavior can vary by version and platform. In particular, the MDN gradient example cited above applies to Firefox 156 and later.
- Check the relevant contrast settings. For web-content contrast, review Firefox Contrast Control and your operating-system settings. For the browser frame or toolbar, inspect the active theme and platform appearance settings.
- Compare the interface in your normal use. After changing a theme or appearance option, check that tabs, controls, focus indicators, and boundaries remain distinguishable and comfortable for you. Do not assume that removing the gradient will help every user.
