Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is announced to improve image detail and stability on PS5; Sony has not said it raises frame rates. Its “performance tier” description refers to the upscaler’s computational positioning, not a published FPS gain. Any wider performance effect depends on the individual game and graphics mode, and needs game-specific evidence.
What QSSR changes on PS5
Sony describes QSSR as an AI upscaler developed from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. The implementation uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned approach intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony’s stated benefits are improved image detail and image stability—not a particular resolution or frame-rate target. Sony’s QSSR announcement calls it a new “performance tier” of AI upscaling.
Sony positions QSSR as a quicker performance tier for PS5, while describing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro as the “gold standard.” That is Sony’s characterization, not an independent benchmark comparing the two upscalers.
Does QSSR increase FPS?
Sony’s announcement does not claim that QSSR increases FPS. It includes no before-and-after frame rates, frame-time results, internal rendering resolutions, latency figures, or comparisons between graphics modes. So there is no supported FPS number or general frame-rate improvement to cite.

An upscaler can affect a game’s rendering workload, but that alone does not establish that a particular PS5 game will run faster. Developers decide how QSSR fits into each title’s graphics options and performance targets. Until there are measurements for a specific game and mode, treat higher FPS as unconfirmed.
Which games support QSSR?
Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. It says each is being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony expects the library to be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not provided a complete future compatibility list. Check the game’s current patch notes and graphics menu to confirm availability.

Comments from the developers describe image quality, not measured speed. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry says it brings greater clarity and detail to Ghost of Yōtei. Neither statement reports an FPS result.
How to judge QSSR in a specific game
For a meaningful comparison, use the same PS5, display, and graphics mode, then compare QSSR off and on. Look for both image changes and performance trade-offs:

- Frame-rate consistency: Does the game hold its target more reliably, or are there still drops?
- Fine detail: Are textures, distant objects, and thin lines clearer?
- Temporal stability: Do details shimmer, flicker, or leave ghosting as the camera moves?
- Mode trade-offs: Does enabling QSSR change any resolution or performance option in that game?
These are useful comparison points, not published results for either launch title. Sony has not reported the measurements needed to say how QSSR affects them.

PS5 video output settings control the signal sent to a connected display; they are separate from a game’s rendering and QSSR implementation. PlayStation Support explains that the console detects a TV’s capabilities and documents supported 1440p and 120 Hz output settings and their display requirements.
