Microsoft documents several ways Word can preserve edits before or beyond a manual save: AutoRecover, and— for eligible Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint Online—AutoSave and version history. Those features mean unsaved or recently edited text may have a recoverable copy. But Microsoft’s support pages do not document every temporary file or prove that every keystroke is written to disk. They also do not establish a memory-only workflow. The accurate answer is that Word offers recovery and cloud-saving features, not a documented guarantee that plaintext stays only in memory.

Does Microsoft Word save unsaved text?

It can preserve changes that you have not manually saved. Microsoft says Document Recovery can open after an Office app closes unexpectedly before the latest changes were saved. Word also has configurable AutoRecover settings. These are recovery features; they do not mean you deliberately saved the document, and Microsoft’s support guidance does not specify every artifact or low-level storage operation involved.

For eligible Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online, AutoSave can save changes as you work. Cloud version history can also retain earlier versions. These are separate from local AutoRecover files.

How AutoRecover, AutoSave, and manual saving differ

Feature What it does Where it applies
Manual save You explicitly save the document. Local or cloud file, depending on where you choose to save it.
AutoRecover Creates recovery data intended to help restore work after an unexpected closure. You can configure its frequency and location. Word settings are available in the documented Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 release families for Windows and Mac. Microsoft’s AutoRecover settings guidance
AutoSave Automatically saves changes every few seconds, according to Microsoft. Eligible Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online; a local path such as C: does not qualify under Microsoft’s described conditions. Availability can depend on subscription, file type, sync state, opening method, and other limitations. Microsoft’s AutoSave overview and AutoSave setup guidance
Version history Provides earlier cloud-file versions that you may be able to restore. Microsoft says AutoSave creates an initial version when you first edit a file, then adds entries periodically—“about every 10 minutes” during an editing session. This is Microsoft’s product-description timing, not an independent measurement. Microsoft’s AutoSave overview

Turning off AutoSave does not turn off AutoRecover while a file is open, according to Microsoft’s AutoSave guidance. A cloud file with AutoSave disabled and a local file therefore should not be treated as equivalent to a document that has no recovery data.

Where Word stores AutoRecover files

Windows

Open File > Options > Save to inspect the AutoRecover frequency and file location. The path shown there is the relevant configured location for that Word installation. Microsoft lists these controls for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016.

Mac

Open Word > Preferences > Save to inspect the recovery frequency. For the location, use Word > Preferences > File Locations > AutoRecover files. Microsoft gives this folder for current Mac versions: /Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery. The folder is hidden in Finder navigation, so the configured location in Word is the more direct place to check. Instructions and platform details are in Microsoft’s AutoRecover settings page.

What happens after Word closes unexpectedly—or you choose Don’t Save?

Microsoft says Document Recovery automatically opens the next time you open an Office app after it closes unexpectedly before the most recent changes were saved. If Word offers a recovered file and you want to keep it, save it promptly. Microsoft’s recovery instructions describe the recovery flow.

On Mac, Microsoft says choosing Don’t Save deletes the AutoRecover file because Office assumes it is no longer needed. That is not a documented secure-erasure guarantee: the guidance does not describe secure deletion, filesystem snapshots, backups, or every other possible copy.

Does turning off AutoSave stop Word from keeping recovery data?

No. AutoSave and AutoRecover serve different purposes. AutoSave applies to eligible cloud-stored Microsoft 365 files and saves changes continuously; AutoRecover is a separate recovery feature. Microsoft explicitly distinguishes them, so disabling the AutoSave toggle should not be treated as disabling AutoRecover for an open file. Check Word’s AutoRecover settings separately if recovery behavior is relevant to your workflow.

Does password-protecting a Word document keep text private while you type?

Microsoft’s password-protection feature encrypts a saved Word document; Microsoft says you must save the file for password protection to take effect. Its documentation does not say that this feature governs unsaved text, AutoRecover data, or other in-progress recovery information. Password protection therefore is not evidence of memory-only editing. Microsoft also says Word for the web cannot encrypt a document with a password or edit a password-encrypted document. See Microsoft’s password-protection instructions.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish

Microsoft’s support pages establish particular recovery and saving features. They are not a forensic inventory of every Word version, operating system, setting, enterprise policy, or possible storage artifact. The cited documentation does not enumerate all temporary files, caches, pagefile or swap behavior, crash dumps, diagnostic artifacts, or endpoint-management copies. It cannot support either universal claim that every keystroke is written to disk or that plaintext never leaves memory.

If you need to assess a specific device or build, distinguish among a Word recovery file, cloud version history, and operating-system or organizational storage. The exact installed version, platform, storage location, AutoRecover and AutoSave settings, and applicable policies all matter; the support guidance alone does not establish what artifacts a forensic examination would find.

Practical choices if recoverable edits are a concern

  • Inspect AutoRecover: use the Windows or Mac settings path above to review its interval and location. Changing the location changes where that recovery data is stored; Microsoft does not say that it disables every other persistence mechanism.
  • Check the file’s storage and AutoSave state: determine whether it is in OneDrive or SharePoint Online and whether AutoSave is active. Cloud AutoSave can save edits as you work and version history can retain earlier versions.
  • Balance recovery against persistence: AutoRecover is designed to restore work after an unexpected closure. If you need to minimize recoverable edits for a particular situation, do not assume that turning off one setting or choosing Don’t Save securely erases every copy.
  • Use password protection for its documented purpose: it protects a saved document, but does not establish that unsaved text exists only in memory.
