LibreOffice’s official privacy policy reviewed does not say that it collects your documents to train AI. It specifically says that user-created documents are not included in crash reports. That is not a universal guarantee for every optional extension, external service, or connected workflow: some features can send data to external servers, so check what you enable.
What LibreOffice’s privacy policy says
The English LibreOffice privacy policy, marked “As of: February 2022,” describes The Document Foundation’s handling of personal data in connection with LibreOffice websites and services. It is not an AI-training policy covering every third-party add-on or deployment.
For the desktop application, the policy addresses crash reports. It says a report can be generated when LibreOffice crashes and that you can choose to submit it, unless sending has been disabled. The policy’s specific statement is: “No user-created documents are submitted in the crash report.”
What a crash report may contain
The policy lists diagnostic information such as the LibreOffice version, loaded modules and libraries, stack traces, operating system and hardware details, interface language, and the crash date and time. It also notes that a report may include small portions of memory and CPU-register contents. The policy says those portions are not analyzed, minidumps are deleted after processing, and only anonymized reports are stored permanently.

This is distinct from the policy’s website disclosures, which include items such as browser and operating-system information, IP address, access time, referring or visited websites, cookies, and Matomo analytics. Those website practices do not by themselves establish that the desktop editor uploads document contents.
Does LibreOffice use documents to train AI?
The official policy reviewed does not say that LibreOffice uses user documents to train AI. The reviewed materials also do not establish that documents are never used for training across every extension, external service, or cloud-connected workflow. So the supported answer is narrower: the policy explicitly excludes user-created documents from crash reports, but it does not make a blanket AI-training promise for all integrations.

When data may go outside LibreOffice
Optional features and document-linked external content are separate from the crash-report policy. Their behavior depends on what is enabled and on the relevant external service.
LanguageTool option
The LibreOffice 7.5 Getting Started guide says that enabling the LanguageTool option sends data to an external server. It does not establish exactly what every current LanguageTool configuration transmits or how the receiving service handles it. Before enabling the feature, review its current settings and the service’s privacy terms.

External data links in Calc documents
LibreOffice’s security advisories include notices dated October 5, 2026, concerning external data links in Calc documents. They describe affected document-loading behavior that could fetch data or read local files. The advisories say these issues were fixed in LibreOffice 26.2.5 and 26.8.0 and recommend those versions or later. This is a security issue involving external links, not evidence that LibreOffice collects documents for AI training.

- Turn off crash-report sending if you prefer. In LibreOffice, open LibreOffice | General and clear Send crash reports to The Document Foundation. The exact menu wording and separator are given in the privacy policy.
- Review optional extensions and connected features. Check which ones are enabled, whether they send data to an external server, and the provider’s current privacy terms.
- Keep LibreOffice updated. For the external-link issues described in the advisories, use version 26.2.5 or 26.8.0, or a later release.
These checks help you understand and control particular data flows; they do not establish an AI-training policy for every integration.

Who maintains LibreOffice?
The Document Foundation is identified as the controller in the privacy policy. LibreOffice’s “Who are we?” page provides project stewardship context. That does not change the scope of the policy’s statements about external services or third-party extensions.
