Kauri ecosystems can hold substantial carbon, and studies have reported changes in litter, vegetation and soil measurements beneath infected trees. Those findings make carbon effects plausible; they do not show a national carbon-stock decline or prove that infection caused the measured differences.
How could kauri dieback affect forest carbon?
Kauri dieback is caused by the soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (PA). It infects kauri through their roots, disrupts the movement of water and nutrients, and can ultimately kill the tree. The Department of Conservation says there is no known cure (DOC kauri disease guidance).
When a long-lived tree dies, its carbon can move among pools rather than simply vanish: less carbon may be added to living wood, while dead material decomposes and releases carbon or becomes part of soil. Changes in litter and regeneration can also affect how carbon enters and remains in an ecosystem. These are plausible pathways, not a quantified account of what PA has done to kauri forests overall.
Why kauri carbon matters
A 2020 review by Bradshaw and colleagues reports that kauri has the fastest carbon sequestration rates to wood of any native New Zealand conifer, citing Kimberley et al. (2014). The review also describes kauri ecosystems as accumulating very large carbon pools over time, citing Silvester and Orchard (1999). These statements provide context for the potential stakes; they are not measurements of carbon lost because of dieback (Bradshaw et al., 2020, Plant Pathology).

What studies have observed—and what they have not
Litter, regeneration and soil respiration
A University of Auckland study record reports changes in litter quantity and composition and in surrounding regenerative vegetation at kauri stands affected by PA, including decreased reproductive litter. It reports no difference in soil CO2 efflux between the infection categories compared. Soil CO2 efflux is a process measurement; by itself, it does not reveal the size or direction of a forest’s total carbon-stock change (University of Auckland study record, 2014).
Carbon and nitrogen beneath infected trees
A 2009–2020 knowledge review describes a small study in which carbon and nitrogen measures beneath infected trees were lower and correlated with higher PA DNA concentrations. A correlation does not establish that the pathogen caused the soil differences: site conditions and other factors may also matter. The review calls for larger comparison studies (Tiakina Kauri, Kauri dieback building knowledge: Review 2009–2020).

The missing forest-wide estimate
The available sources do not give a robust estimate of carbon-stock loss caused by PA across kauri forests, establish a national trend, or settle the cause of the observed soil differences. Tree-level observations and short-term ecosystem-process measurements cannot be treated as stand-wide or forest-wide carbon inventories. A stronger estimate would need broader comparisons of infected and less-infected stands, separating soil, living biomass and litter, and accounting for changes over time and for other differences between sites. The Kauri Dieback Strategic Science Advisory Group’s 2018 science plan identifies ecosystem impacts as a research priority (Kauri dieback science plan).
What current surveillance tells us
On 4 June 2026, DOC reported that a survey found no PA in Kaimai Mamaku and established baseline information on kauri health there (DOC, “Kaimai Mamaku free of kauri dieback”). This is a site-specific surveillance result, not evidence that PA is absent from other forests or a measure of carbon storage.

How visitors can reduce the risk of spreading PA
Infected soil can be carried on footwear, clothing and other gear, vehicles, and animals, including wild pigs, livestock and pets, according to Biosecurity New Zealand. DOC advises visitors to use wash stations where available, clean their gear, follow signs and stay on tracks. Check current instructions for the particular reserve or track: conditions and requirements can vary by location.
- Use kauri wash stations where available and follow their instructions.
- Remove soil from footwear and gear, and clean them as directed.
- Stay on marked tracks and obey local signs and closures.
- Check current official guidance before visiting a specific kauri area.
These steps reduce opportunities to move contaminated soil; cleaning alone should not be treated as a guarantee that footwear or equipment is pathogen-free. DOC’s visitor guidance is available at “Kauri: New Zealand native plants”.

How New Zealand manages kauri dieback
The National PA Pest Management Plan took effect on 2 August 2022. MPI says it introduced ten rules for people visiting kauri areas, cultivating kauri or having kauri on their land, and describes it as the strongest protection available under the Biosecurity Act 1993. Because applicable instructions can depend on location and activity, check MPI’s current page rather than relying on a static checklist: MPI, “Kauri dieback” (last reviewed 29 July 2026).
