It is not confirmed either way. Google’s published Glowbar instructions explain how the lid light shows battery and system status, but they do not describe a knock or tap gesture for requesting a battery reading. Computerworld reports that the old Chromebook Pixel trick has returned, while a PCWorld hands-on account does not provide enough detail to confirm the interaction. The available evidence therefore does not establish that the gesture is absent—or show a verified sequence that works.
What Google officially says Glowbar does
Glowbar is the LED strip on a Googlebook lid. Google describes it as an at-a-glance indicator for battery life, charging, and other system activity. Its official Glowbar help page documents patterns that appear for different states; it does not say to knock or tap the lid to request them.
Battery levels and charging
Google’s support instructions associate the illuminated portion and color with these battery ranges:
- Green, fully lit: 95% or more.
- Green, about three-quarters lit: 60–94%.
- Yellow, about half lit: 20–59%.
- Red, about one-quarter lit: 0–19%.
Google also describes a blinking red light for a charging error. At a critically low battery, the device may not start; Google advises charging it for a few minutes before pressing the power button again.

Power, sleep, and Gemini activity
The help page also covers lighting for power-on and sleep or resume activity, plus a continuous blue-and-purple gradient during a Gemini conversation. Glowbar settings can turn off the always-on and Gemini lights, but Google says critical power, charging, and sleep/resume indicators remain enabled. Turning off the Gemini light does not turn off the ability to speak with Gemini.
Why reports about the old Pixel gesture conflict
The Chromebook Pixel’s light bar is the historical comparison behind the “knock-knock” question. Computerworld’s Googlebook FAQ says the old trick—touching the bar in a particular way to show battery level—has returned. The report does not give a reproducible sequence, so it is not enough to tell readers exactly how to perform the gesture.

PCWorld’s hands-on account describes the writer tapping the bar on a closed laptop while expecting a battery display like one remembered from an older Pixel. The available account does not establish whether a display appeared, or identify the precise Googlebook model, software version, or action used. It cannot settle the question by itself.
Google’s product overview and its Acer and Lenovo Googlebook product pages describe Glowbar as a battery or charging status indicator. Those descriptions confirm the feature on the named product pages, but do not clarify whether a touch gesture is supported.

How to check Googlebook battery with Glowbar
Use the documented color and illuminated-area patterns as an at-a-glance estimate. Google’s listed ranges are broad bands, not exact percentage readouts. The help instructions do not establish that a knock or tap is needed for those indicators to appear, and they do not provide a verified gesture sequence. If you are trying the older Pixel trick, treat it as unconfirmed rather than relying on it for an exact battery reading.
