Yes. Fail2ban can run alongside Docker and Prometheus, but the pieces have separate jobs: a Fail2ban exporter exposes Fail2ban metrics for Prometheus to scrape, while Fail2ban’s firewall action determines whether a client is actually blocked. Docker daemon metrics alone do not report Fail2ban state, and successful scraping does not prove that a ban blocks traffic reaching a container.
How Fail2ban, Docker, and Prometheus fit together
Fail2ban monitors for activity that matches its configured jails and applies an action, commonly a firewall rule. Prometheus collects metrics; it does not enforce bans. To observe Fail2ban, run a Fail2ban-specific exporter that can read Fail2ban’s server socket and expose metrics on an HTTP endpoint.
For example, one documented exporter reads /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock and exposes metrics on port 9191. That port and configuration belong to that exporter project, not to Fail2ban exporters generally. Follow the selected project’s current instructions for its image, options, and metrics. Exporter project documentation
Mount the socket’s parent directory
The exporter needs access to the socket where Fail2ban runs. The cited exporter recommends mounting the socket’s parent directory read-only, rather than mounting only the socket file. Fail2ban removes and recreates the socket when it shuts down and starts again; a file-only mount can leave the exporter attached to a stale mount. Check that the exporter process also has permission to read the socket.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Optional textfile metrics
The same exporter documents an optional textfile collector. Its Docker instructions mount the directory containing the .prom files and set F2B_COLLECTOR_TEXT_PATH; files without the .prom suffix are ignored. These settings are specific to that project. Exporter project documentation
Docker daemon metrics are not Fail2ban metrics
Docker can expose Prometheus-compatible metrics for the Docker daemon after you configure its metrics-addr. Docker’s example binds the endpoint to 127.0.0.1:9323 and has a Prometheus container scrape host.docker.internal:9323. Docker warns that binding to 0.0.0.0 exposes the endpoint more broadly, so consider the security implications before using that address. Docker Engine metrics documentation

That target monitors Docker itself, not the applications running in containers. Docker states: “Currently, you can only monitor Docker itself. You can’t currently monitor your application using the Docker target.” For Fail2ban state, Prometheus still needs a Fail2ban exporter. Docker Engine metrics documentation
Make the exporter reachable by Prometheus
Prometheus must be able to connect to the exporter’s metrics endpoint over the network you configure. In a simple deployment, a static scrape target may be enough. If container addresses change or you want targets selected from container metadata, Prometheus Docker service discovery can identify container addresses, ports, names, images, and labels; relabeling can filter which discovered targets are scraped. Discovery finds targets, but it does not by itself solve network reachability. Prometheus Docker service discovery

Why a visible ban may not block container traffic
A working scrape confirms that Prometheus can read exporter metrics. It does not confirm that Fail2ban’s firewall action blocks traffic on the path to a container. Docker documents that published-port traffic is routed through NAT before reaching the INPUT and OUTPUT chains used by ufw, effectively bypassing rules there. Whether a ban works depends on the Fail2ban action, firewall backend, Docker network mode, and how the container port is published. Docker packet filtering and firewalls
Do not treat disabling Docker’s iptables or nftables management as a routine fix: Docker warns that doing so is likely to break container networking and is unsuitable for most users. Docker packet filtering and firewalls

Troubleshoot monitoring and enforcement separately
- Verify Fail2ban and its socket. Confirm that Fail2ban is running and that its socket exists where the exporter is expected to read it.
- Check the exporter’s socket mount and permissions. Use the selected exporter’s documented mapping, preferably mounting the parent directory when that project recommends it, and confirm the exporter process can read the socket.
- Check the metrics endpoint. Confirm the exporter starts and that its endpoint is reachable from Prometheus using the configured Docker network or host address.
- Inspect Prometheus targets. In Prometheus, open the Targets page and check the scrape status. Docker’s documentation also points to this page for verifying target discovery.
- Look for Fail2ban metrics, not just Docker metrics. A healthy Docker daemon target does not show application-level Fail2ban state.
- Test a ban’s effect separately. In a controlled environment, verify that the chosen Fail2ban action affects the firewall path used by the relevant Docker network and published ports.
Choosing a Fail2ban exporter
Exporter projects are not interchangeable: ports, configuration flags, metrics, and labels can differ. Compare the selected project’s documented metrics and supported configuration, release and image maintenance, license, socket-access requirements, and fit with your existing Docker and Prometheus networks. A second exporter project also cautions against mounting only the socket file; check its own instructions for the details that apply to it.
