Not necessarily—but Google does not promise that every edited video keeps the source file’s exact resolution, bitrate, codec, or visual quality. On Android, Google Photos says saving an edit creates a copy. Separately, the app’s backup-quality setting can resize a video, so a change in a cloud-backed copy is not by itself proof that editing caused it.
What Google Photos says about saving an edit
Google’s Android instructions say to tap Save “to save a copy of the video with your edits.” That indicates the save action creates another copy rather than describing an overwrite of the original. The instructions do not specify the edited copy’s export resolution, bitrate, or codec, however. They therefore establish neither a universal lossless guarantee nor a guaranteed quality reduction. The guidance is platform-specific: it describes the Android app and should not be treated as a specification for every Google Photos version, device, or editing feature. Google’s Android help lists trimming, stabilization, crop and rotation, adjustments, filters and effects, text, speed, and audio tools. It says video adjustment and filter/effect features require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Audio erasure is listed for Pixel 8 and newer, while a mute option is listed for non-Pixel devices. Feature availability can vary by device and app version.
Editing and backup are separate processes
A viewer may notice a difference for several reasons: the edited copy’s rendering, the version stored through Google Photos backup, or the way a preview or playback appears on a particular device or connection. Google’s cited quality guidance describes backup settings, not how every edit is encoded or how playback adapts. Don’t assume that a cloud copy’s resolution change came from editing without checking the file and its backup details.

How Google Photos backup quality can change a video
Google’s backup settings describe how photos and videos are stored in your Google Account. These settings are distinct from the act of saving an edited copy.

How to check whether the backup setting explains a difference
- Open the video’s information or details in Google Photos. Google directs users to the item’s details to check its backup quality and size.
- Check the backup quality shown for that item. Compare it with the setting’s resolution threshold: 1080p for Storage saver or 480p for Express. Express may not be offered in your region.
- Compare the original and edited copy as files. If both are available locally, inspect their dimensions and file sizes. A size or dimension difference is useful evidence of a file change, but file size alone does not establish how much the image looks different.
- Keep an untouched source if it matters. Save a separate original copy before editing if you need to preserve the source independently of the edited version and its backup.
What the editor’s history can—and cannot—tell you
Google announced a video editor in 2021 with tools including trimming, stabilization, rotation, cropping, perspective changes, filters, and granular adjustments. In an announcement dated December 9, 2025, Google described templates, music, custom text, and a redesigned editor with a universal timeline and multi-clip editing. It described features as available or rolling out at publication, with some tools limited to Android; availability may have changed since then.
