No—not on the evidence of DirectStorage alone. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a way for games to use high-speed NVMe storage with less CPU overhead, but its Windows documentation does not require PCIe 5.0 or show that Gen5 drives outperform Gen4 drives in PC games. To decide whether Gen5 is worth paying extra for, look for controlled benchmarks in the specific games you play.
What DirectStorage does—and what it does not promise
Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a feature that lets games use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs. Its intended workload includes many small reads—such as 64 KB reads—at multiple gigabytes per second, with minimal CPU overhead. That is a description of the technology’s purpose, not a promise that every game will use it or run faster on every system. Microsoft’s Windows DirectStorage overview does not specify PCIe 5.0 as a requirement.
DirectStorage is an API and software path for game data, not a performance guarantee attached to a particular SSD generation. A title’s implementation and the rest of the system matter, so the fact that a drive advertises higher sequential throughput does not by itself establish a gaming advantage.
Does DirectStorage require PCIe 5.0?
No PCIe 5.0 requirement is stated in Microsoft’s Windows overview; it identifies NVMe SSDs as an example of suitable high-speed storage. Microsoft also documents DirectStorage in an Xbox Series X|S GDK overview, where it discusses PCIe-connected NVMe storage. That console-focused GDK material should not be treated as a PC requirement or as a PC benchmark. Microsoft’s GDK overview gives design goals of 50,000 IOPS and 5%–10% of a single CPU core, but those figures are not measured Windows PC gaming results.

What would prove a Gen5 gaming advantage?
The relevant evidence is a controlled comparison of Gen5 and Gen4 SSDs in the same DirectStorage-enabled PC game. Useful results would identify the game and version, SSD models and capacity, system configuration, and test method, then report comparable load-time or asset-streaming results. A drive’s advertised sequential speed is not a substitute for that evidence.
No sourced, controlled PC-game comparison between PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 SSDs is established here. That means there is no supported numerical gain to cite or a universal purchase recommendation to make from DirectStorage documentation alone.

Platform details that matter, but do not settle Gen5 value
Windows and BypassIO
Microsoft says BypassIO is part of the Windows infrastructure that supports DirectStorage and is available starting with Windows 11. Its driver documentation scopes BypassIO to NVMe devices. These are software and device-support details; they do not establish that PCIe 5.0 is faster than PCIe 4.0 in games. Microsoft’s BypassIO driver documentation describes the support path.
Compression paths
Microsoft’s DirectStorage API reference lists GPU-optimized, GPU-fallback, and CPU-fallback compression support modes. Which path applies depends on conditions, and the reference does not tie those modes to PCIe generation. The compression-support enumeration describes the available modes.

How to decide whether to buy Gen5
If gaming is the only reason you are considering a PCIe 5.0 SSD, compare reliable results from the games you actually play before paying a premium. Check the platform fit as well: motherboard and CPU lane compatibility, capacity, and the drive’s sustained performance and thermal behavior can affect whether a particular SSD is a sensible choice. No prices, individual drive results, or model-specific recommendations are established here.
