Yes. Daylight saving time (DST) can change how a scheduled local clock time maps to the moment a device or service acts. The result depends on whether the schedule follows local wall-clock time, a named time zone, or a fixed instant—and on how the specific app handles clock changes. In spring, some local times do not occur; in fall, some occur twice.

Why a clock change can affect a schedule

A recurring instruction such as “run at 2:30 a.m. every Sunday” is not necessarily a single, unchanging instant. Software has to interpret the time in a time zone. When that zone changes its offset, the UTC instant corresponding to a local time can change too.

  • Spring forward: the clock skips ahead, so a range of local times does not exist that day. A schedule in that range might be moved to a later valid time, skipped, or handled another way.
  • Fall back: the clock moves back, so a range of local times happens twice. A recurring schedule may need to select the first occurrence, the second, or both.

Those are edge cases, not evidence that every alarm or event shifts by an hour. A schedule’s time-zone model and the product’s rules determine what happens.

Do calendar events move when daylight saving time changes?

Not necessarily. Google says that created events are converted to UTC and displayed in local time. A change in the seasonal offset can therefore change the corresponding UTC instant while the event continues to display at its intended local hour. Google also cautions that changes to a region’s time-zone rules can cause some past or future events to display incorrectly; that is a specific rule-change caveat, not a guarantee that all events move at every DST transition. On iPhone, Apple Calendar displays events using the current location by default, but an event can be assigned a different time zone. Its Time Zone Override changes the time zone shown in Calendar, so the displayed hour and the event’s assigned zone should not be treated as the same setting. Apple Calendar guide for iPhone.

  • If an event appears an hour off, inspect its assigned time zone and the calendar’s display time zone before editing the event.
  • If a region has changed its time-zone rules, some older or future event data may not display as expected; consult the calendar provider’s guidance for that case.

Will a phone alarm still ring at the same time?

Phone support documentation does not establish one universal outcome for alarms during every skipped or repeated hour. Apple’s Clock guide covers setting alarms that repeat on selected days, but does not specify all DST edge cases. Android’s help explains automatic date, time, and time-zone settings—including that location may be used to determine the device’s time zone—but it is not a DST-specific alarm guarantee. See Apple Clock guide and Android Help: Set date, time, and time zone.

For developers using Apple’s AlarmKit, the distinction is explicit: a relative schedule is defined in relation to the device’s current time zone, while a fixed schedule is absolute and does not change when the device’s time zone changes. That describes the API’s schedule types, not every third-party alarm app. See AlarmKit scheduling documentation, AlarmKit relative recurrence reference, and Apple’s WWDC25 AlarmKit session.

What happens to scheduled computer tasks?

Windows Task Scheduler: spring-forward example

Microsoft documents a specific rule for weekly triggers: if the scheduled time falls between 2:00 a.m. and 2:59:59.999 a.m. on a spring-forward day, the task runs at the earliest time that exists that day. In Microsoft’s Pacific-time example, a weekly task set for 2:30 a.m. on March 13, 2022 runs at 3:00 a.m.; on other Sundays it runs at 2:30 a.m. This example documents that trigger type’s spring-gap behavior, not every scheduler or the fall-back case. Recurring schedules and the fall-back hour

Apple Foundation’s recurrence-rule example shows why a repeated local time needs a selection rule. A recurring 1:00 a.m. event on November 3, 2024 can resolve to 1:00 a.m. PDT (08:00 UTC) when the policy is .first, or 1:00 a.m. PST (09:00 UTC) when it is .last. This is an API example illustrating the ambiguity; it does not define behavior for other schedulers. Apple Foundation repeated-time policy documentation.

How to check an alarm, event, or task that looks shifted

  1. Check the device’s time settings. Confirm automatic date/time and time-zone settings are enabled if that is what you intend. On Android, review the date, time, and time-zone controls described in Android Help.
  2. Inspect the schedule’s time zone. For a calendar event, check the event’s assigned zone separately from the zone used to display the calendar.
  3. Identify the schedule model. Determine whether it follows a local clock time, a named zone, or a fixed instant; then consult that app or scheduler’s documentation for skipped and repeated times.
  4. Verify the next transition-day occurrence if the schedule is critical. Documentation for one product or API does not guarantee the same behavior in another alarm app or scheduler.
