Chrome Live Caption can generate on-screen captions for audio and video in Chrome, and Chromebooks support most refreshable Braille displays. But Google’s current support pages do not confirm that Live Caption captions are sent to a connected Braille display. A February 2025 report described the integration as an experimental ChromeOS development, not a verified general release.
What Chrome Live Caption does
Live Caption turns speech in supported audio and video playing in Chrome into text displayed in a movable caption bubble. Google says users can move, collapse, and expand the bubble, and customize its font, size, and color. On Windows and Mac, font changes are managed through the system’s caption preferences. Google’s original 2021 announcement described the feature for social and video sites, podcasts and radio, personal video libraries, embedded video, and most web-based audio or video chat services. That launch announcement said English was supported at the time; it should not be treated as a current, complete list of supported languages. Google’s launch announcement also said captions were created on-device and the feature worked offline.
Does Chrome Live Caption work with a Braille display?
It is not confirmed by the current Google support documentation. Google separately documents Live Caption on Chromebook and compatibility with most refreshable Braille displays, but does not say that the Live Caption bubble or its text appears on a connected Braille device. The two documented capabilities do not, by themselves, establish that they work together.

On February 10, 2025, Chrome Story reported seeing an experimental flag in Chromium development related to Braille display support for Live Caption, and characterized the work as ChromeOS-targeted. That is evidence of an experimental development signal, not confirmation of stable availability. The report does not establish a ChromeOS minimum version, setup steps, supported display models, or language coverage. Read Chrome Story’s report.
Google’s Chromebook accessibility feature guide confirms broad Chromebook support for refreshable Braille displays, but does not document Live Caption output to them. Check current official release notes and setup guidance before relying on the integration for captions.

How to turn on Live Caption
Google’s current instructions use different settings paths by platform. These steps enable the documented caption feature; they do not enable or verify Braille output.
- Windows or Mac: In Chrome, open Settings → Accessibility and turn on Live Caption.
- Linux: In Chrome, open Settings → Accessibility, then use the Captions section.
- Chromebook: Open Settings → Accessibility → Manage accessibility features → Audio and captions, then turn on Live Caption.
When captions appear, use the bubble controls to move, collapse, or expand them. On Windows and Mac, use the operating system’s caption preferences to adjust the font; Chrome also provides caption appearance controls described in Google’s help page.

What Google says about privacy
For Live Caption, Google states: “All audio and captions are processed locally, are never stored and never leave your device.” Google separately notes that translated captions can be sent to Google for translation, so the local-processing statement should not be extended to translation. Google’s help page on captions and translations explains both behaviors.
