Yes. ChatGPT offers optional parental controls that link a parent or guardian’s account to a teen’s account. A linked adult can manage selected features and schedules and may receive limited safety notifications—but cannot read the teen’s chats, view chat history, or monitor activity in real time.
What parental controls do—and how they differ from teen protections
Parental controls let a parent or guardian link accounts and manage selected settings. They are optional: eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 may receive the ChatGPT for Teens experience automatically, without account linking. That experience includes age-appropriate safeguards and learning-oriented tools. OpenAI says it may determine age using information provided with the account, verified age, or age prediction.

OpenAI states that ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and that parental consent is required for users ages 13 to 18. It also cautions that ChatGPT can produce output unsuitable for some audiences; see its age and safety information.
How to link a parent and teen account
Either the adult or the teen can start the invitation. On the web, the parent or guardian can use these steps:

- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Add family member.
- Choose phone or email, enter the teen’s contact information, and send the invitation.
- Have the teen accept the invitation in ChatGPT.
- After linking, select the teen under Family members to review available controls.
A teen can also invite a parent or guardian from Settings > Parental controls. One adult can link accounts with multiple teens, but each teen can be linked to only one parent or guardian at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts.
What a linked parent can manage
Controls cover selected features and behavior, not unrestricted supervision. The defaults below describe the documented settings; availability or defaults can vary for some controls, and changes may not take effect immediately. Some changes apply only to new conversations, while existing conversations can retain earlier settings.

Turning off most controls hides or blocks the associated feature; turning one on makes it available, subject to ChatGPT’s other safety protections.
Study hours and Quiet hours are different
Study hours encourage a study-oriented setup; they do not prevent access. During the scheduled period, eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study mode. The rule does not cover GPT or Project conversations, and the teen can still access Study mode outside that schedule.

Quiet hours are the access restriction: during scheduled periods, the teen cannot use ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work. Both are optional schedules, but only Quiet hours restrict use.
Can parents read a teen’s conversations?
No. Linking accounts does not give a parent access to the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. The controls are for selected settings and schedules, not chat monitoring.

When can a parent receive a safety notification?
OpenAI says a linked parent may receive a notification in limited circumstances: a specially trained review identifies a serious self-harm concern; certain disordered-eating concerns may indicate a health concern; or a teen account is deactivated for conversations relating to acts of violence under OpenAI’s Usage Policies. Disordered-eating notifications are described as applying to Chat conversations, not Work or Codex. Account-deactivation review processes may differ.
Notifications are not real-time monitoring and may not identify every concern. They may include a brief description, relevant account action, and support information, but not a transcript or chat history. OpenAI says notifications are enabled by default after linking, though it can take up to a few hours before they can be sent. They are not a substitute for professional care or emergency services.

Do sensitive-content safeguards guarantee appropriate answers?
No. The setting is intended to lower the chance of certain sensitive, explicit, graphic, or age-inappropriate responses—for example, graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, and content promoting extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting. OpenAI says, “No system is perfect”; the setting cannot guarantee every response will be appropriate. What happens when a teen turns 18?
If OpenAI identifies a linked teen account as belonging to someone 18 or older and moves it out of ChatGPT for Teens, teen protections are turned off by default and the parental-controls link ends. The account holder then controls their settings, and the former parent can no longer manage the account or receive teen safety notifications.
