Bluetooth proximity locking can reduce the chance that an unattended, idle device stays open after you walk away, but it cannot guarantee a stolen device will lock. Windows Dynamic Lock only locks an idle PC after its paired phone’s signal drops; Android’s Extend Unlock can keep a phone unlocked while a trusted Bluetooth device remains connected. Use these features as convenience safeguards, not as substitutes for a strong screen lock, theft protections, and recovery tools.
What Bluetooth proximity locking does—and what it cannot prove
A proximity feature reacts to a Bluetooth connection or signal: depending on the platform, it may lock a computer when a paired phone moves away or keep a phone unlocked while a trusted device stays nearby. The signal is only a trigger. It does not prove who is holding the device or whether its owner is present.
Bluetooth range and signal behavior vary by device and environment. Google says an Extend Unlock trusted-device connection may reach up to about 100 meters, but that is a possible range—not a dependable lock boundary. Google also warns that someone may imitate a trusted Bluetooth connection. Google’s Extend Unlock guidance explains the feature and its limitations.
How the features differ
| Feature | What triggers or enables it | What it means for theft risk |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Dynamic Lock | The paired phone’s Bluetooth signal falls below a threshold, and the PC is idle. | Can lock an idle PC after you walk away; it does not ensure an actively used or stolen PC locks. |
| Android Extend Unlock | After you unlock with your PIN, pattern, or password, a connected trusted Bluetooth device can keep the phone unlocked. | A phone taken while it remains connected to a nearby trusted device may stay accessible. |
| Apple Stolen Device Protection | Applies extra checks to selected sensitive actions on an iPhone, subject to its setup and location conditions. | Raises barriers to sensitive access or account and security changes after the phone is away from its owner; it is not a Bluetooth proximity lock. |
Windows Dynamic Lock: a backup for an idle PC
Dynamic Lock uses the Bluetooth connection to a paired phone as a cue to lock a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer when the signal drops below a threshold. The important limitation is that the computer must be idle. Microsoft describes Dynamic Lock as an additional barrier and states: “It doesn’t replace the need for the user to lock the computer.” See Microsoft’s Dynamic Lock documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes Dynamic Lock useful if you forget to lock an idle computer after leaving it. It is not a reliable response to someone taking a computer while you are using it, nor a substitute for locking the screen before stepping away.
Android Extend Unlock: a trusted device can keep the phone open
Extend Unlock (formerly Smart Lock) can keep an Android phone unlocked while it remains connected to a trusted Bluetooth device. You must first unlock the phone with its PIN, pattern, or password to start the trusted state. If someone takes the phone while it is still connected to a nearby watch, car system, or other trusted device, the phone may remain unlocked. Google notes that Bluetooth connectivity can extend up to about 100 meters depending on the devices and environment; actual range is not a predictable security boundary.

Google advises against trusting devices that are always with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case, and warns that a Bluetooth connection may be imitated. Review Google’s instructions for choosing when an Android phone can stay unlocked and remove trusted devices that create unnecessary exposure.
iPhone Stolen Device Protection: a different kind of safeguard
Stolen Device Protection does not lock an iPhone when a Bluetooth signal disappears. Instead, it adds safeguards for selected sensitive actions. For some actions, it requires Face ID or Touch ID with no passcode fallback. Certain account or security changes can also trigger a one-hour Security Delay followed by another biometric check.

Apple’s support article, published March 31, 2026, says the feature requires Find My, a passcode, biometrics, two-factor authentication, and Significant Locations, and is available on iOS 17.3 or later. It must be enabled before the theft. Apple also offers an “Always” setting for applying the extra measures regardless of familiar location; that can mean added friction when you make sensitive changes. See Apple’s Stolen Device Protection guidance.
What to set up before a device goes missing
- Lock manually when you step away. On a PC, use Dynamic Lock as a backup for an idle computer, not as your only locking method.
- Use a strong screen lock. A PIN, password, or pattern helps protect a device when proximity features do not lock it.
- Review Android trusted devices. Remove devices that are routinely near the phone, especially accessories that could leave the phone unlocked when it is taken. For higher-risk situations, Android’s Lockdown action temporarily disables biometric unlocking and Extend Unlock from the lock screen until the next unlock. The exact label and availability can vary by Android device.
- Enable iPhone protections in advance. Turn on Find My and Stolen Device Protection, and choose the familiar-location or “Always” behavior that fits your security needs.
- Know how to reach recovery controls. Make sure you can sign in to the account used to locate, lock, or mark your device lost.
What to do if a phone is stolen
- Use the platform’s lost-device service promptly. For an iPhone, use Find My to mark the device as lost. Apple says Stolen Device Protection’s safeguards and delays are intended to give the owner time to secure the account and device.
- Secure the associated account. Follow the platform’s account-security and recovery steps, particularly if you suspect the thief can access the phone or its messages.
- Do not assume proximity will secure it. A nearby trusted Bluetooth device may keep an Android phone unlocked, while Windows Dynamic Lock applies only when its PC is idle. Act through the device’s lost-mode and account controls rather than waiting for a Bluetooth trigger.
What Bluetooth security research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 paper presented at the USENIX WOOT conference analyzed the Master Lock Bluetooth Deadbolt D1000 under a specific attacker model: an attacker near the lock who could record encrypted Bluetooth Low Energy traffic and inject packets. The researchers reported issues including replaying recorded sessions to repeat commands such as unlocking, persistence of access after revocation, clock manipulation, audit-log tampering, and malformed messages that could disrupt or corrupt the lock. The paper is about that particular physical deadbolt and those stated conditions; it does not establish that Windows Dynamic Lock, Android Extend Unlock, or every Bluetooth product has the same flaws. It does illustrate why a Bluetooth connection or encryption claim alone cannot establish that a product is secure. See the USENIX WOOT 2025 conference paper listing.

Does proximity locking prevent theft or unauthorized access?
No published theft-prevention rate or effectiveness statistic is established by the platform guidance cited here. Proximity features can help with specific situations—especially forgetting to lock an idle PC—but their behavior depends on connection, device state, and the environment. They are not proof of ownership and cannot promise that a stolen device will be locked.
