The device must receive and process policy, scan for updates, and determine that the selected update applies. Installation and any required restart are separate steps.
What Intune approval actually does
For Autopatch-backed quality update policies, Intune sends policy details to Windows Autopatch, which determines the approved update content. Devices obtain approved updates through Windows Update and install them according to their Windows Update client policies. Approval is therefore a deployment decision, not a synchronous install command. Microsoft’s quality updates overview describes this flow.
The endpoint still needs to communicate with the service and process the policy. Windows Update also evaluates whether the device needs the update and which applicable version to offer. A device that already has the update, or has a newer applicable update, will not necessarily install the specific version named in a policy.
How long does an Intune quality update take to install?
There is no guaranteed number of minutes or hours between approval and installation. The timing depends on when the device checks for updates, its internet connectivity, whether it can communicate with the service, and cloud processing. Microsoft says an expedited update starts after the device’s next update scan and service communication; those conditions make timing variable. In Microsoft’s words, “The actual time required for a device to start an update depends on the device internet connectivity, its scan timing, whether communication channels to the device are functioning, and other factors like cloud-processing time.” This applies to starting an expedited update, not a promise of completion by a set time.
Choose the deployment method for the job

Use update rings or a standard quality update policy for regular servicing. Use an expedite policy when a particular supported update needs to move faster than normal deferrals allow. Expedite targets one update, but Windows Update checks the device’s build, architecture, and update state. If a newer applicable update supersedes the selected one and is available at check-in, Windows may install that newer update instead.

Installation and restart are different milestones
An update can download and install before Windows forces a restart. Ring settings shape client behavior, while deadline settings determine when installation and restart requirements take effect. For expedited updates, users may restart, schedule a restart, or let Windows choose a time outside active hours; if they miss the restart deadline, Windows can restart during working hours. Microsoft documents these restart options.
Microsoft’s deadline guidance defines the effective deadline as whichever is later: the update’s discovery by a scan plus the configured deadline, or the time a restart becomes required plus the grace period. When that effective deadline arrives, Windows forces a restart regardless of active hours. For quality updates, the deadline countdown begins when the client discovers the update; the grace-period countdown begins when the device reaches pending restart. Other policies that defer scans, downloads, or installation—and the Windows version—can affect the experience. See Microsoft’s Windows compliance deadline documentation.

Microsoft’s general recommended starting values are a one-day quality update deadline and a two-day feature update deadline. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that an update will install immediately. Users may be prompted and, depending on how close the deadline is, may be able to defer, reschedule, or restart immediately. Microsoft’s deadline guidance explains the settings.

Autopatch-backed Intune feature, quality, and driver update policies have prerequisites. Microsoft lists Intune enrollment, Microsoft Entra join or hybrid join, access to Microsoft update endpoints, and an applicable Windows Autopatch entitlement. Entra-registered devices are not supported for these policy types; their management is limited to Windows Update client and update ring policies. - Confirm the device is enrolled in Intune and has a supported join state.
- Verify the tenant has the applicable Windows Autopatch entitlement and the device can reach Microsoft update endpoints.
- Allow for the device’s next update scan and service communication rather than treating policy save time as install start time.
- Check whether the update is applicable or already superseded by a newer version.
- Review ring deferrals, deadline settings, and restart controls separately from approval.
