No—not every Steam Machine supports an eGPU, and a USB-C port alone does not make one compatible. Steam Machine covers the current Valve model and older, vendor-built PCs with different hardware. A report describes one way to connect an eGPU to the current Valve machine through its internal M.2 slot, but that is a complex modification, not official plug-and-play support.

Why eGPU compatibility depends on the exact Steam Machine

“Steam Machine” does not identify one universal chassis or motherboard. Valve’s historical brochure shows designs from multiple manufacturers, with model-specific graphics and expansion options. That means a port or upgrade that applies to one Steam Machine cannot be assumed to work on another.

For a conventional eGPU enclosure, the host usually needs a suitable high-speed connection such as Thunderbolt or USB4 with PCIe tunneling. A USB-C-shaped connector is not enough: USB-C describes the connector, not necessarily the data protocol or eGPU capability. Valve’s published information does not certify eGPU support for the current Steam Machine.

What the ports and specifications establish

Steam Machine Documented graphics and ports What this establishes about eGPU use
Current Valve Steam Machine Valve describes a semi-custom discrete AMD CPU and GPU. Steam Support lists front USB-A as USB 3.2 Gen 1, rear USB-A as USB 2.0, and a rear USB-C port on a separate bus. Tom’s Hardware identified the rear USB-C connection as USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) in its August 11, 2026 report. Valve’s published information does not state or certify conventional USB4/Thunderbolt eGPU support. The reported eGPU setup did not use USB-C as its GPU data link.
ZOTAC NEN ZOTAC’s specification lists a GeForce GTX 960 and a USB 3.0 Type-C port; it does not list Thunderbolt. eGPU support is not stated in the cited specification. Type-C alone does not establish compatibility.
Dell Alienware Steam Machine R2 Dell’s documentation lists USB 3.0 ports and model-specific GeForce GTX 960 or Radeon R9 M470X graphics. eGPU support is not stated in the cited documentation. Check the manual for the exact model rather than inferring support from its USB ports.

Valve’s Steamworks guidance concerns game compatibility and optimization; it is not eGPU certification. The current machine’s HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs are listed for external displays, but those outputs do not establish an eGPU connection.

The reported M.2-to-OCuLink workaround on the current Valve model

Tom’s Hardware reported one user’s setup using an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, and an Aoostar EG01 dock. The adapter used the machine’s single M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot. Because that slot was occupied by the adapter, the user moved the boot drive into a USB-C-to-NVMe enclosure.

This route is fundamentally different from plugging a typical eGPU enclosure into the rear USB-C port. It repurposes an internal PCIe storage connection and requires storage relocation. The report also describes cable routing and a case modification; the machine was being run open while that modification remained unfinished.

  • Advantage of the dock: Our enclosue detachable design on both ends for improved portability and easy storage. PCB board with 10μ gold-plated contacts ensure superior conductivity and reduce oxidation/rust-related resistance that may cause system crashes or BSOD. Multi-status LED indicators provide clear visual feedback for real-time device monitoring. Transfer Speed: PCIe 4.0 x4 (64Gbps )
  • SFF-8611 Male to Male Cable: Ultra-thin & flexible design (0.5mm thickness) with premium aesthetics, eliminating port damage risks from rigid traditional OCuLink cables. Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
  • Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
  • Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
  • Connection: The GPU link in the report ran through the internal M.2 slot and OCuLink, not the USB-C port.
  • Storage: The machine’s boot drive had to be relocated to a USB-C NVMe enclosure.
  • Physical changes: The reported setup involved cable routing and case modification.
  • Support status: This is a reported workaround for one machine, not an officially supported upgrade or proof of compatibility across Steam Machines.

Valve’s Steam Support guidance cautions that Valve is not responsible for screws or components damaged while users open or modify the machine. That warning does not settle every warranty question; the available documentation does not provide a model-by-model warranty ruling across vendors and jurisdictions.

What performance has been reported—and what it does not prove

In the same Tom’s Hardware report, the user said the RX 9070 XT setup delivered over 100 FPS in Crimson Desert at the High preset. This is one user-reported result, not a controlled comparison against the built-in GPU at matching settings. It does not establish the expected performance uplift, results in other games, or performance on other Steam Machines.

How to check your own Steam Machine before buying eGPU hardware

  1. Identify the manufacturer and exact model. Use the system’s model label or its original documentation. “Steam Machine” by itself is not enough to identify the hardware.
  2. Check the model’s manual for the actual interface. Look for explicit Thunderbolt or USB4 support and eGPU guidance; do not treat USB-C or USB 3.x as equivalent.
  3. Confirm the proposed connection uses a compatible PCIe path. If considering an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, verify the exact slot, adapter, dock, and GPU requirements for your model. The reported current Valve setup occupied its only M.2 NVMe slot.
  4. Account for storage and physical changes. Determine how the boot drive will connect if the M.2 slot is repurposed, and whether the route requires opening, cable routing, or modifying the case.
  5. Check operating-system and GPU-driver recognition for the exact configuration. The cited report does not establish a general compatibility matrix for SteamOS, drivers, docks, or games.
  6. Look for results for your game and settings. A single reported frame rate is not a reliable prediction for another title or configuration.

If the manual does not explicitly establish the needed connection, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than buying a conventional USB-C eGPU enclosure on the assumption that the connector will work.
