It can, but using Always-On display does not mean your iPhone will inevitably develop burn-in. Apple says OLED burn-in is possible after extended use, especially in extreme conditions such as showing the same high-contrast image continuously at high brightness for a prolonged period. Apple does not publish a burn-in rate or a time-to-burn-in estimate specifically for Always-On display.
How Always-On display works on iPhone
On supported models, Always-On display keeps a dimmed version of the Lock Screen visible while the iPhone is locked. It can show the time, date, notifications, and widgets. You can choose whether the Lock Screen shows wallpaper or notifications, or switch the feature off at Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Apple says the display can refresh as slowly as 1 Hz and dims when the iPhone is locked or idle.
The screen also turns off automatically in certain circumstances. Apple lists these conditions:
- The iPhone is face down or its visibility is obstructed.
- It is not near a paired Apple Watch.
- CarPlay is in use or Continuity Camera is active.
- Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is enabled.
- The iPhone reaches the user’s usual bedtime.
Apple also says the display can turn completely dark in situations such as when the iPhone is in a pocket. These behaviors limit when the screen remains visible; Apple does not say they eliminate OLED aging.

Burn-in and temporary image persistence are different
Apple describes image persistence as a faint remnant of an image that remains visible after the screen changes. Temporary image persistence can disappear after a few minutes of normal use. Burn-in refers to more lasting visual effects associated with OLED pixels being used unevenly over time. Apple says OLED displays may show slight visual changes after extended long-term use, with burn-in more likely in extreme cases such as prolonged, continuous display of the same high-contrast image at high brightness.
If you notice a faint remnant, Apple’s guidance distinguishes temporary persistence from burn-in, but its support page does not provide a diagnostic procedure for identifying the cause on an individual iPhone.

Ways to reduce the chance of OLED aging
Apple’s recommendations focus on software and display habits, not on eliminating all risk:
- Keep iOS updated. Install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone.
- Use Auto-Brightness. Apple says it can further reduce the effects of burn-in and image persistence.
- Choose a shorter Auto-Lock interval. This turns the display off sooner when you are not using the iPhone.
- Avoid prolonged static images at maximum brightness. Apple’s instruction is: “Avoid displaying static images at maximum brightness for long periods of time.”
- Lower brightness if an app keeps the screen on while idle. You can temporarily adjust brightness in Control Center.
Apple says Super Retina and Super Retina XDR displays use algorithms that monitor individual-pixel usage and use calibration data to adjust pixel brightness. This is intended to reduce visual effects from burn-in; it is not a guarantee that burn-in cannot occur.

Should you leave Always-On display enabled?
Keeping it on gives you glanceable Lock Screen information without waking the iPhone. Turning it off reduces the time the display remains visible and may suit you better if you prefer to minimize display use or do not need the information at a glance. You can also keep the feature on while disabling wallpaper or notifications in its settings.
Apple provides no quantitative comparison of burn-in risk with Always-On display on versus off, so there is no evidence-based percentage or promised safe usage period to apply. The practical choice is between the convenience of a dimmed Lock Screen and your comfort with OLED aging over time.

Which iPhone models have Always-On display?
Apple’s current support guidance lists Always-On display as on by default on iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max; iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max; iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max; and iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Apple says the feature is off by default on iPhone Air. Availability and default settings can change, so check Apple’s brightness and colour temperature guide for the current list.
