Usually, you should not assume a used PS5 Pro comes with a transferable Sony warranty. In the United States, Sony says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered, and its PS5 hardware warranty is for the original purchaser. Sony’s UK guide is less categorical, saying third-party used products “may not be covered.” Rules depend on region and purchase channel, so verify the specific console with Sony before paying.
Does Sony’s warranty transfer to a second-hand buyer?
In the United States, Sony’s PS5 limited hardware warranty lasts one year from the original purchase date, names the original purchaser, and requires valid dated proof of purchase for service. Sony also states that third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty. A receipt helps establish when the console was bought, but it does not by itself prove that Sony will provide warranty service to a later owner. Check the specific unit and your circumstances with Sony. Sony’s US/Canada warranty terms and US used-buying guide provide the relevant terms.
Sony’s US warranty page addresses PS5 hardware generally; it does not set out a separate PS5 Pro warranty term. The stated one-year period is measured from the original purchase date, not the date you buy the console second-hand.
Warranty coverage depends on where and how you buy
- United States: Sony says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered. Its US/Canada hardware warranty is written for the original purchaser and requires dated proof of purchase. Sony’s guide distinguishes certified refurbished products as covered, but does not establish the provider, term, or conditions for every refurbished listing. Read the actual listing and warranty terms. Sony US buying guide
- United Kingdom: Sony says third-party used PlayStation products “may not be covered.” Check current local terms and any retailer’s written warranty rather than assuming the US rule applies. Sony UK buying guide
- Other countries: Local terms were not verified for every region. Consult the applicable regional PlayStation warranty and ask regional support about the serial number and proof of purchase.
A retailer, refurbisher, or private seller may offer separate coverage or returns. Those terms are not the same as a Sony manufacturer warranty; read them in writing, including who provides the coverage and how long it lasts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to check before paying
- Request the original dated receipt. Ask for a retailer receipt or bill of sale that shows the original purchase date. Then ask Sony whether the document and second-hand buyer’s circumstances qualify for service. A receipt is evidence of purchase, not proof that warranty eligibility transfers.
- Inspect the serial number and warranty seals. Confirm the serial number is present and appears unaltered. Sony identifies an altered, defaced, or removed serial number as an exclusion and advises buyers to check serial numbers and seals. Ask whether the console has been opened or repaired, then check with Sony how that history affects this unit. Do not assume that any prior opening automatically cancels all coverage. Sony warranty exclusions and its buying guide explain these checks.
- Test the console in person, or request a clear demonstration. Check that it powers on, connects to the internet, and responds to its buttons and ports. If it has a disc drive, test it; also inspect image quality, physical damage, and signs of overheating. Sony recommends video proof of key functions when buying remotely. A successful test can reveal current problems but cannot guarantee future reliability.
- Confirm PlayStation service access. Ask the seller to demonstrate the console online and access PlayStation services before you hand over payment. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A brief successful connection cannot guarantee the console will never be suspended later. Sony’s used-buying checks
- Have the seller deactivate the console and confirm they no longer have access. Sony includes this in its used-product buying guidance. Ask the seller to complete it before the sale.
- Review the seller, listing, and transaction terms. Check feedback, the stated condition, the return policy, and any seller-provided warranty. Be cautious with suspiciously attractive offers. Return rights and private-sale protections vary; there is no universal private-sale return right established here.
What Sony’s US warranty does—and does not—promise
Sony’s US/Canada limited warranty applies only in the United States and Canada. For a materially defective product within the warranty period, Sony’s stated remedy is repair or replacement with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option. Registration is not required, but valid proof of purchase is required for service. The terms also exclude certain circumstances, including unauthorized opening or service, an altered, defaced, or removed serial number, and products sold and clearly marked “AS IS” or with faults. Ask Sony about the particular console and repair history rather than extending an exclusion beyond what the terms say. Read Sony’s warranty terms.
