Sometimes—but battery capacity alone cannot tell you how long a foldable phone will last. A larger battery stores more energy, but a phone’s runtime also depends on how much power its screens, chipset, software, network connection, and current workload use. To compare models fairly, look at results from the same kind of test, not just the mAh figures.
What battery capacity tells you—and what it does not
Battery capacity, usually listed in milliamp-hours (mAh), is a measure of stored charge under a rating convention. Battery life is how long the phone runs before that energy is depleted during a particular workload. More capacity can give a phone more endurance, but only if its power use does not rise enough to offset the difference.
That distinction matters on foldables. A book-style phone has a hinge and two displays in a compact design, and using its larger inner screen can draw more power than using its cover screen. Brightness, refresh behavior, chipset, software, network signal, and what you are doing all affect drain. OPPO’s 2025 foldable-market report notes that “A larger display leads to higher power consumption.” OPPO’s report also shows its book-style Find N series increasing from 4,500 mAh in Find N to 5,600 mAh in Find N5, a 19% rise across that sequence. That trend does not establish a fixed runtime gain for each added mAh.
Compare runtime only when the test matches
A runtime number is meaningful only alongside its workload and conditions. A manufacturer’s saved-video playback estimate is not directly comparable to an editorial test that continuously browses the web over cellular service. Screen used, brightness, refresh settings, network, test start and stop criteria, and whether the figure is a claim or an independent test all matter.

Samsung’s video playback estimate
Samsung lists up to 24 hours of video playback for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and 23 hours for the Fold6; both have a listed typical capacity of 4,400 mAh. Samsung describes the playback estimate as an internal test using a saved 720p file, Bluetooth earphones, default settings, and LTE. It is an estimate, not an everyday guarantee or an independent result. Samsung says the Fold7’s typical capacity was tested under third-party lab conditions and also lists a rated capacity of 4,272 mAh. The company cautions: “Actual battery life varies by network environment, features and apps used, frequency of calls and messages, the number of times charged, and many other factors.” See Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold comparison for its methods and qualifications.
Tom’s Guide cellular web-browsing tests
Tom’s Guide reported 10 hours 55 minutes for the Galaxy Z Fold7 and 10 hours 35 minutes for the Fold6 in its 2025 cellular web-browsing test. Both were listed at 4,400 mAh; the Fold7 test used its 8-inch main display at the default adaptive refresh rate. In that same comparison, the OnePlus Open (4,805 mAh) lasted 11 hours 45 minutes, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (4,650 mAh) lasted 11 hours 36 minutes. These are results for that publication’s test, not a conversion formula from capacity to runtime. The Fold7’s better result than the Fold6 despite equal listed capacity illustrates that capacity is not the only factor; the test does not isolate which other factor caused the difference. A later comparison shows the same pattern
In a 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison, the Motorola Razr Fold (6,000 mAh) lasted 14 hours 44 minutes, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold (5,015 mAh) lasted 12 hours 16 minutes, and the Galaxy Z Fold7 (4,400 mAh) lasted 10 hours 55 minutes. Tom’s Guide describes its test as setting brightness to 150 nits and running a custom script that simulates continuous web surfing until depletion; for book-style foldables, it used the larger display. How to judge a foldable’s battery claims
- Check what the capacity figure means. Look for whether the maker reports typical, rated, or both; regional versions may differ.
- Find out which screen was active. Main-screen use and cover-screen use are different workloads, especially at high brightness.
- Match the activity and network. Video playback, cellular browsing, video calls, and mixed daily use do not consume power at the same rate.
- Read the test conditions. Note brightness, refresh behavior, network mode, settings, and how the test determines depletion.
- Separate claims from test results. Manufacturer estimates describe the manufacturer’s method; independent editorial tests describe their own protocol. Neither necessarily predicts your routine exactly.
For example, OPPO states that its Find N5 has a 5,600 mAh battery and claims up to 25 hours of continuous video streaming and 8.6 hours of Zoom meetings on the inner screen. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results; they should not be compared directly with Tom’s Guide’s cellular browsing times. OPPO attributes its result to its silicon-carbon battery, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, and system-level power optimizations in its Find N5 article.

What to expect in everyday use
Your own result can differ from a published test because your screen time, brightness, signal strength, apps, and charging history differ from the test conditions. A larger-capacity foldable is a useful clue, not a guarantee. If battery life is a deciding factor, favor a same-protocol runtime test for the specific models you are considering, and check that it uses the screen and activity closest to your use.
