But headless YouTube playback still uses power: the computer stays awake, receives and decodes video, and plays it. The actual saving depends on the PC, playback settings, and what your wall-meter measurement includes. There is no universal watt figure for a headless Linux PC.
Headless playback is not the same as idle
Removing the display can lower the power use of the whole setup, but it does not eliminate the computer’s playback load. A PC streaming YouTube remains in an active working state; an idle reading is not an equivalent comparison. ENERGY STAR distinguishes active work from idle, which it defines around basic applications and the absence of sleep. Its computer specification also describes long-idle conditions with the display in low-power mode while the computer remains working. See the ENERGY STAR Computers Version 8.0 specification.
Be clear about the measurement boundary. A reading at the wall can include the PC and its power supply, and potentially a display, speakers, or other equipment connected through the same meter. If the display is connected in one run but absent in another, the difference cannot be attributed solely to the PC’s playback workload.
Published readings are examples, not a universal Linux figure
Two published measurements illustrate why readings must be tied to a particular device and test rather than treated as a typical value for Linux PCs.

The difference between these figures does not show that one operating system, browser, or PC class is always more efficient. The systems, resolutions, browsers, and test procedures differ, and neither reading establishes a population-wide typical power draw.
Why YouTube playback conditions change the result
“YouTube playback” is not one fixed workload. YouTube says playback quality can respond to connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload’s quality, and browser support for newer formats. It gives VP9 as an example of a format that can affect whether higher-quality streams are available. Record the actual resolution and, where relevant, frame rate and codec for a useful comparison. YouTube’s general system-requirements page gives approximate sustained connection speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD. These are service guidance figures, not power estimates. The same page lists Ubuntu 10 or later among requirements for premium video; that is not a guarantee of any particular Linux system’s playback efficiency. Check YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices.
For a fair power comparison, keep playback resolution fixed rather than allowing quality to change automatically. Also use the same browser, playlist, network conditions, and computer configuration. Hardware video decoding can affect the workload, but the cited sources do not establish one Linux browser setup that minimizes power on every machine.

Measure your own PC at the wall
- Choose the measurement boundary. Plug a suitable electricity-usage meter into the wall and connect the PC’s power supply to it. Decide whether the display, speakers, or other devices are included; record that choice.
- Record a settled idle baseline. Use the same PC and power supply you will test for playback. Let the system settle, then record average watts and accumulated kWh for a representative interval.
- Run the playlist under controlled conditions. Use the same browser and network, set a known resolution, and note the resolution, frame rate if relevant, browser, and whether hardware decoding is functioning. Let playback settle before recording.
- Measure for long enough to average variation. Record average watts and accumulated kWh over an interval long enough to smooth momentary changes. Repeat the measurement if readings fluctuate substantially.
- Compare like with like. Compare playback against idle on the same system, with the same equipment included. If you want to know the display’s contribution, measure it separately or compare whole-setup readings while clearly stating which devices were connected.
For a playlist left running continuously, accumulated energy is often the useful figure: measure kWh across a day or week rather than relying on a brief peak. To estimate cost, multiply measured kWh by your electricity tariff for that billing period. The tariff varies by location and plan, so there is no universal cost to apply.

Leaving a YouTube playlist playing on a headless PC is different from broadcasting prerecorded videos as a live YouTube stream.
