No—not as part of a routine software update. Samsung describes updating a Galaxy as downloading and installing software, not as a factory reset. A successful update is not described as deleting your personal data or resetting your settings. It can, however, change the interface or how software behaves, and Samsung does not guarantee that every setting will remain unchanged on every Fold model.
What happens to your data and settings during a normal update?
Samsung’s regular update instructions do not say that installing an update erases personal files or factory-resets a phone. A factory data reset is a separate action: Samsung says it “restores your phone to its factory settings and removes all personal data.” Samsung’s factory-reset guidance distinguishes that from installing software.
While the update is installing, you cannot use the device and files may be inaccessible until the process finishes, according to Samsung’s update instructions. Temporary inaccessibility during installation is not the same as deletion.
Could an update change the interface or settings?
An update can change the interface or software behavior. Samsung cautions that screens and available settings may differ by model, software version, country, and service provider. Those possible software changes do not establish that a routine update resets personal settings, but Samsung’s general guidance is not a guarantee about every setting on every Galaxy Z Fold.

Your carrier’s release notes may also describe changes for your exact device and market.
How to check the update for your Fold
- Open Settings. Find Software update or System updates; the name can vary by model and software version.
- Read the update notice before installing. Check the listed changes and confirm that the notice applies to your Fold and region. If needed, check your carrier’s release notes for the same model and update.

What if the update fails?
Update-failure recovery is different from a routine installation. Samsung warns that its emergency recovery process may include a factory data reset. That is the situation in which personal data could be erased—not an outcome Samsung describes as part of an update that installs normally.
Back up important data before attempting a factory reset or recovery when possible. Samsung advises backing up before these steps; its guidance does not say that special physical backup hardware is required for an ordinary update.

What Samsung says about Fold security updates
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual (SM-F956B, revision August 2024) says security updates strengthen device security. It describes update controls and notes that emergency security updates may install automatically. This is a Fold6 manual for a particular model and region; it should not be treated as a specification for every Fold generation or market.
