Check the exact model’s specifications to see what comes in the box and which add-ons it supports.
What Atmos needs—and what it doesn’t
Dolby Atmos describes immersive sound that can include height effects; it does not require a soundbar owner to add a particular number of separate speakers. Some all-in-one soundbars use virtualization to create an Atmos effect, while others use physical upward-firing drivers or dedicated height modules. Dolby says an all-in-one virtualized soundbar can work without extra speakers (Dolby’s soundbar guidance).
A Dolby Atmos logo alone does not tell you whether a soundbar has a subwoofer, includes rear speakers, or accepts them as optional add-ons. Those details vary by model and package.
What a subwoofer adds
A subwoofer’s job is deep bass, not the Atmos height layer. Dolby’s speaker-setup guide separates subwoofer count from height-speaker count in its channel notation (Dolby Atmos Speaker Setup 101). A soundbar can therefore support Atmos without a separate subwoofer, though a model with one may suit listeners who want stronger low-frequency impact.

Soundbars differ in how they handle bass: some rely on built-in drivers, some include a separate subwoofer, and some support a compatible add-on. Check the exact product listing and manual rather than inferring the configuration from the Atmos label.
What rear speakers add
Rear speakers are optional for Atmos on a soundbar. Dolby’s FAQ for Sony BRAVIA and Dolby Atmos states, “No, you don’t need rear speakers to get Dolby Atmos.” It also describes rear speakers as a way to get fuller surround, particularly in a larger room or home theater (Dolby’s Sony BRAVIA and Dolby Atmos page).

If you want that more enveloping surround effect, confirm that the soundbar supports the specific rear-speaker kit you plan to use. Compatibility and placement space matter; speakers from another product line may not work.

In Dolby’s common x.y.z notation, the first number counts ear-level speakers, the second counts subwoofers, and the third counts height speakers. For example, the subwoofer figure and height figure describe different parts of a system; a subwoofer is not what makes the height layer Atmos. The notation is useful context, but soundbar bundles and designs differ, so verify the exact model’s specifications (Dolby Atmos Speaker Setup 101).

Choose by room, bass, and surround priorities
- For a simple setup or a small room: An all-in-one virtualized Atmos soundbar can avoid the need for extra speakers, an option Dolby identifies for rooms where additional speakers are undesirable (Dolby’s soundbar guidance).
- For stronger bass: Look for a model that includes or supports a separate subwoofer. Its role is deeper bass, not Atmos height effects.
- For fuller surround: Consider a model with compatible rear speakers, especially if the room is large enough to benefit and has space for placement.
- For physical height effects: If the soundbar uses upward-firing drivers, keep their path to the ceiling clear; Dolby notes that an unobstructed ceiling path is important for optimum performance (Dolby Atmos for sound bar applications).
- Before buying: Check the exact listing and manual for included components, supported add-ons, and connections.
