Usually, yes—most noticeably when scrolling, swiping, and moving through menus. A 120Hz screen can show motion more smoothly than a 60Hz screen, but it cannot make a slow phone’s processor faster or guarantee that a game runs at 120 frames per second. Whether it is worth it depends on the phone’s refresh-rate settings, battery behavior, display quality, and the apps you use.

What 120Hz changes in everyday use

Refresh rate is how often a screen can update its image. A 120Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second, compared with up to 60 times per second on a 60Hz display. The difference is most apparent in motion: scrolling through a long page, swiping between screens, or watching supported animations can look and feel smoother.

That benefit is perceptual, not a guarantee that every task will feel twice as fast. Static text does not become sharper simply because the refresh rate is higher, and someone who mostly reads or watches standard-frame-rate video may notice less difference than someone who scrolls frequently.

In its review of the Samsung Galaxy A26 5G, Android Authority says the 120Hz refresh rate helps scrolling and navigation feel smoother. The same review describes the phone’s AMOLED colors as vivid, while finding its brightness only just usable outdoors in strong sun. That is a useful reminder that refresh rate is only one part of screen quality: Android Authority’s Galaxy A26 5G review.

Why 120Hz does not mean a faster phone or 120-fps games

Three things are related but distinct: the screen’s maximum refresh rate, the refresh mode the phone is currently using, and the frame rate an app or game actually renders. A 120Hz screen can display motion smoothly only when the phone and software supply frames at a suitable rate. It does not remove processor limits, eliminate pauses when opening apps, or ensure that a game supports 120 fps.

For example, Tom’s Guide found that basic tasks on the Motorola Moto G (2026) were generally manageable, but reported occasional swipe stutter and dropped frames in demanding gameplay. The phone’s 120Hz display did not prevent those performance limits: Tom’s Guide’s Moto G (2026) review.

Refresh behavior also varies by model. Android Authority says the Galaxy A26 5G requires users to choose fixed 120Hz or 60Hz rather than offering adaptive switching. GSMArena’s entry-level guide likewise notes that the Redmi Note 14 5G is not especially fast despite its 120Hz AMOLED screen, and describes the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G as lacking automatic refresh-rate switching. Check the settings and behavior of the specific model, not just its headline specification: GSMArena’s entry-level smartphone guide.

Does 120Hz drain battery?

It can affect battery life, but the size of the effect depends on the phone, its display settings, and what you do with it. A model-specific test is not a universal estimate for other phones or users.

  • DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.

  • BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 cellular web-surfing battery test recorded 19 hours 11 minutes for the Motorola Moto G (2026) in adaptive Smart & Balanced mode, and 18.5 hours with the refresh rate locked to 120Hz. Those are results for that phone under that publication’s test conditions, not a general percentage penalty for choosing 120Hz. Android Authority also reports an efficiency cost from keeping the Galaxy A26 5G at 120Hz.

If battery runtime matters more to you than smoother motion, check whether the phone lets you select a lower refresh rate or an adaptive mode. The available options differ: the Galaxy A26 5G review, for instance, describes a choice between fixed 120Hz and 60Hz rather than adaptive switching.

How to decide if 120Hz is worth it on a budget phone

Compare the phones you are considering as complete devices. A 120Hz label is most useful when the handset can keep everyday interactions responsive and the screen is otherwise good enough for your needs.

  • How you use the phone: Frequent scrolling and interface navigation are where the smoothness benefit is easiest to notice. If most of your use is static reading or standard-frame-rate video, it may matter less.
  • Refresh-rate options: Find out whether refresh is adaptive, fixed at 120Hz, or manually selectable. A fixed high-refresh mode and an adaptive mode can have different battery trade-offs.
  • Battery behavior: Prefer comparable tests on the exact model and mode. A result from one handset should not be treated as a prediction for another.
  • Screen quality: Compare brightness for outdoor use, panel type, resolution, and viewing quality alongside refresh rate. A vivid panel that is hard to see in strong sunlight may not suit your needs.
  • Overall responsiveness and games: Consider the chipset, software, and the frame rates supported by the apps or games you actually use. A high-refresh screen cannot compensate for stutter caused by limited hardware.
