Yes, technically: a native 1,000Hz monitor can refresh twice as often as a 500Hz display, shortening the interval between refreshes from 2ms to 1ms. Whether that makes a noticeable difference depends on the game, the frames your PC can deliver, the display’s motion performance, and your own use. A 1,000Hz specification does not mean a game is running at 1,000 FPS.

What 1,000Hz changes

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display can update its image. The interval between refreshes is 1,000 milliseconds divided by the refresh rate: at 500Hz, the interval is 2ms; at 1,000Hz, it is 1ms. That is a real technical difference, but it does not by itself guarantee a large or noticeable improvement in every game.

The monitor’s refresh rate and a game’s frame rate are separate. Refresh rate describes the display’s capability; frame rate describes how many frames the game renders or outputs each second. If the game supplies frames more slowly than the monitor can refresh, the display cannot create new game-rendered information between them. LG explicitly cautions that support for 1,000Hz does not guarantee 1,000 FPS or higher in any particular game (LG UltraGear 25G590B-B product information).

Why refresh rate is not the whole story for motion clarity

Motion clarity is how clearly moving objects appear. It depends on more than the number of refreshes per second: pixel transitions, how long each image remains visible, frame delivery, and blur-reduction features can all affect what you see. A high refresh rate can reduce the time between display updates, but the specification alone does not describe every aspect of moving-image sharpness.

Blur-reduction methods such as strobing target the persistence blur associated with sample-and-hold displays. They are distinct from increasing a panel’s native refresh rate, and their availability and compatibility vary by monitor. Variable refresh rate (VRR) instead aligns display updates with a game’s changing frame output. Some implementations combine approaches: NVIDIA describes G-SYNC Pulsar as combining VRR with strobing (NVIDIA’s G-SYNC Pulsar explanation).

Native refresh rate versus “effective motion clarity”

“Native refresh rate” is the display’s actual refresh mode. It is not interchangeable with a vendor’s “effective motion clarity” figure, which may describe the effect of blur reduction rather than how often the panel natively refreshes. For example, NVIDIA says its ULMB 2 effective motion clarity figure is calculated using refresh rate and the reciprocal of strobe duty cycle. That is a blur-reduction metric, not a claim that the panel’s native refresh rate has increased (NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 explanation).

What research says—and does not say—about the benefit

NVIDIA Research’s 2026 study of frame rates in first-person-shooter tasks examined rates up to 500 FPS and reported perceived benefits across the tested range. It does not test 1,000Hz, so it cannot establish a universal performance benefit from a 1,000Hz monitor (NVIDIA Research study).

LG Display’s July 2026 announcement describes the company’s own experimental work and reports input-lag and motion-blur results at higher OLED refresh rates. Those company-reported results are not independent proof that every player will benefit equally (LG Display announcement). The available evidence does not establish a single refresh-rate threshold that applies to everyone, or a general rule that people cannot perceive changes above a particular rate.

A real example: LG UltraGear 25G590B-B

LG’s UltraGear 25G590B-B is a 25-inch-class Full HD (1920 × 1080) monitor with a native 1,000Hz refresh mode. LG lists IPS, MBR Pro, G-SYNC compatibility, FreeSync Premium, DisplayPort 2.1, and HDMI 2.1. The highest refresh mode has system and connection requirements: LG says it requires Windows 11, qualifying recent graphics hardware, and DisplayPort 2.1. LG also notes that a 1,100Hz overclock can limit adaptive-sync functionality, illustrating that a maximum-rate mode may involve feature trade-offs. Check LG’s current product information for the exact supported configurations (LG product page).

LG Electronics USA announced U.S. availability and a price of $999.99 on August 24, 2026. That is the announced U.S. price, not a guarantee of current retail price or stock (LG U.S. announcement).

How to decide whether 1,000Hz suits you

  • Check your real game frame rates. Compare the frame rates your games and PC can sustain with the monitor’s refresh capability. The display does not make the game render faster.
  • Compare at the resolution you will use. The cited LG example is Full HD. Consider whether that resolution and screen size suit your priorities before paying for its refresh rate.
  • Look beyond the Hz number. Check independent motion testing when available, pixel transitions, visible ghosting, and which blur-reduction modes work in practice.
  • Check VRR and strobing behavior together. Confirm which features can operate at your chosen refresh rate; a strobing mode or overclock may affect adaptive-sync support.
  • Verify the complete system path. Confirm your operating system, graphics hardware, cable, and port support the monitor’s intended mode.
  • Weigh the cost against your use. Compare native refresh rate, frame rates you can sustain, motion performance, features, resolution, and price rather than treating the largest Hz number as an automatic upgrade.
