A fixed download or video stream does not use extra data just because it travels over 5G instead of 4G. In practice, 5G can lead to higher usage if you choose larger downloads, higher-quality media, or spend more time on data-heavy services. Your mobile plan—not a universal 5G rule—sets your allowance and what happens when it runs out.
Why 5G does not automatically use more data
Speed and data volume are different measurements. Speed describes how quickly information transfers; data usage measures how much information transfers. If the same file is downloaded, or the same page is loaded, the amount of content is essentially the same whether the connection is 4G or 5G.
For example, downloading a 500 MB file still transfers about 500 MB over either network. A faster 5G connection may finish sooner, but it does not add data to the file. The same principle applies to streaming when the service delivers the same video quality and settings.
5G is designed to support higher speeds and capacity than 4G. Qualcomm describes 5G as significantly faster, and says the technology is capable of peak data rates up to 20 Gbit/s and average rates above 100 Mbit/s; those are capability figures, not a speed guarantee for an individual connection. Why your usage might increase on 5G
Usage can rise when the faster connection changes what you do, rather than because 5G charges extra bytes for identical content.
- Higher-quality streaming: If you select a higher video resolution or a service delivers a higher-bitrate stream, more data is transferred.
- Larger or more frequent downloads: Faster downloads can make large files, app updates, or offline media more convenient.
- Longer or more data-heavy sessions: If quick loading encourages you to watch more video or use other data-intensive services for longer, the total adds up.
These changes depend on the app, device, settings, and your choices. There is no universal rule that every app automatically raises its quality on 5G; the available evidence does not establish one default across services and markets. An older Opensignal report discusses behavioral reasons 5G users may consume more, but it should not be treated as a current estimate for everyone. Opensignal’s 2021 analysis is useful for understanding those possible mechanisms, not for predicting your personal usage.

5G speed does not predict your data consumption
A speed comparison is not a data-usage comparison. Experienced speeds vary with factors such as distance from a cell site, available spectrum, and local network use. Safaricom, for example, lists average speeds of 150–200 Mbps for 5G and 23–35 Mbps for 4G in its own FAQ; these are carrier-stated figures and should not be generalized to other providers or locations. Safaricom’s 5G FAQ describes its claims and performance factors.
Ofcom’s 2024 Mobile Matters report found that 29% of measured 5G uploads averaged at least 20 Mbit/s, compared with 15% of 4G uploads and 3% of 3G uploads. Those figures measure upload performance, not how much data people use or whether an identical activity consumes more bytes on 5G. Ofcom’s Mobile Matters report provides the measurement context.

Your plan determines what happens when you use your allowance
Mobile plan terms govern the monthly allowance and any treatment after a high-speed data limit is reached. Depending on the plan, a provider may reduce speeds or apply other terms; there is no single post-allotment rule for all 5G plans. Verizon’s support guidance explains that online activities use monthly data and that post-allotment treatment depends on the plan. Check Verizon’s data-usage guidance for its plan-specific explanation, and consult your own provider’s terms for the rules that apply to you.
Some carriers distinguish 5G speed from data volume explicitly. Virgin Plus, for instance, says its 5G data-speed plans may reach up to 1 Gbps, compared with up to 150 Mbps for its 4G LTE plans. Those are the carrier’s stated maximums for its plans, not a claim that 5G uses less or more data. Virgin Plus’s 5G FAQ gives its comparison.

How to check whether 5G is driving your usage
- Check cellular-data use by app on your phone. The exact menu name and location vary by operating system and device; look in cellular, mobile network, or data-usage settings.
- Review media quality settings. Check video and music apps for streaming quality, autoplay, and downloads over mobile data. Choose lower quality or Wi-Fi-only downloads if you want to reduce cellular use.
- Compare the dates and totals with your carrier account. Your phone’s counter and the provider’s billing-period total may use different periods or update at different times, so compare like-for-like dates.
- Read your plan’s allowance terms. Confirm the data limit, any high-speed threshold, and what the provider does after it is reached. These details vary by plan and country.
Is there a typical extra-data percentage for 5G?
No reliable universal figure establishes how much extra data a typical person uses solely because they are on 5G. Speed measurements cannot supply that percentage: they describe transfer performance, not the amount of content a person chooses to consume. Actual usage depends on content quality, file size, session length, app behavior, settings, and the user.
