Make:’s ambassador invitation is a community participation opportunity centered on sharing your maker story—not a described paid job. Make: outlines three steps: share your story, nominate a makerspace for a chance to receive equipment and Make: publications, and, only if you choose, consider investing through its Wefunder campaign. Its toolkit also offers story prompts, shareable materials, and a route to volunteer at Maker Faire Bay Area.

What does being a Make: ambassador involve?

Make: presents the role as a way for people in its maker community to tell their own stories and help spread the word about Make: and Maker Faire. In its 2025 anniversary article, Make: said it had been “covering, curating, and celebrating makers for 20 years”—the publication’s own anniversary framing.

The article says one ambassador will be featured on makezine.com each week. It does not describe compensation, employment, or a paid ambassador program, so do not assume the invitation is a job or that participation comes with payment.

What are the ways to participate?

Route What you do Who it supports Financial commitment
Share a maker story Tell how Make: or Maker Faire helped you as a maker; the toolkit provides prompts and sharing resources. Your story can be shared with the Make: community. None stated.
Nominate a makerspace Submit a makerspace nomination for a chance to receive tools, machines, and Make: books and magazines. A makerspace. None stated.
Volunteer at Maker Faire Bay Area Use the toolkit’s volunteer route and check current event and volunteer details. The event community. None stated; the toolkit mentions free tickets for volunteering, but current terms are not established.
Consider investing through Wefunder Review the campaign and its current terms if you want to invest. Make:, through the campaign described in the article. Investment involves a financial commitment; participation is optional.

How can you share your maker story?

Start with Make:’s Let’s Make Toolkit. It includes a name-and-email form, prompts for shaping a story, and templates and other shareable assets. One prompt asks, “How did Make: or Maker Faire help you as a maker?” You can use that question to focus on a specific project, skill, community connection, or moment of inspiration rather than trying to tell your whole maker history.

Make:’s article describes sharing a maker story as its first step: “Step one is easy — become an ambassador and share your maker story.” The weekly feature is a possibility the article advertises, not a guarantee that every submitted story will be published.

What should you know before nominating a makerspace?

Make: says a nomination gives a makerspace a chance to receive tools, machines, and a library of Make: books and magazines. The article does not state who is eligible to nominate, how a makerspace is selected, the odds of receiving a prize, a deadline, or the specific prize contents. Check the current nomination information before submitting, and treat the outcome as a chance rather than a promised award.

Is investing required to become an ambassador?

No. Make: frames investing as a further step only “if you are able to and choose to take it even further.” The article mentions a Wefunder campaign and describes the possibility of owning a stake, but it does not establish whether the campaign is currently active or give current offering terms. Do not treat investing as an ambassador requirement; consult the campaign itself and review its current disclosures before making any financial decision.

What about volunteering at Maker Faire Bay Area?

The toolkit offers a volunteering route and mentions free tickets for volunteers. It also lists September 26–28 on Mare Island, but the event year is unclear on the page. That date should not be treated as an upcoming event date. Check the toolkit and current Maker Faire information for the event year, open volunteer roles, ticket conditions, and registration details.
