You need a webcam only when you want or need other people to see you on a call. A camera can show facial expressions, reactions and body language that audio misses, but buying a separate webcam is not automatically necessary: a laptop camera, smartphone or tablet may already work. And for some conversations, audio-only is the more practical choice.
What does a webcam add to a call?
A webcam sends live video of you to the people on a call. That visual channel can help others identify who is speaking, see reactions and notice nonverbal cues. Microsoft describes those benefits in its guidance for hybrid meetings, where remote participants may otherwise have difficulty reading the room. The principle applies to ordinary video calls too, although it does not mean every participant must keep a camera on. Microsoft’s hybrid-meeting guidance focuses on meeting-room equipment, not on a requirement for home-office cameras.
Video can be useful when the conversation depends on presence or visual feedback: for example, an interview, a client presentation, a one-to-one conversation, or a telehealth visit where the provider needs to see you. It may also help people who rely on lipreading or visual cues. The value is situational: video adds information, but that information may not be necessary for every discussion.
A Zoom-commissioned Morning Consult survey illustrates reported preferences, not proven outcomes. The online survey covered 1,179 U.S. professionals from August 23–30, 2021; Zoom described the sample as unweighted and gave an approximate 3% margin of error. Among respondents, 75% said they felt more connected when their camera was on, and 70% felt video increased trust between themselves and clients. Those are respondents’ perceptions, not evidence that turning on a camera causes connection, trust, productivity or better business results. The survey is also dated, so its figures should not be treated as current universal norms. Zoom’s video-engagement guide gives the survey context.

Do I need to buy a separate webcam?
Usually, first check whether a camera you already own works with the service you plan to use. Zoom supports built-in cameras as well as USB webcams, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidance identifies computers, smartphones and tablets as possible devices for telehealth. A separate desktop camera is not a general prerequisite for video calling or medical care.
- Built-in laptop camera: Often the simplest starting point for calls at a desk. Check that the calling app detects it and that its position gives you a usable view.
- Phone or tablet: May be suitable for a video telehealth visit or other call, particularly if it has a working camera, microphone and connection. Ask the provider or meeting organizer about the specific service requirements.
- External USB webcam: Consider one when you need to place the camera separately from the screen, raise it closer to eye level, or address a specific issue with your built-in camera or setup.
- Audio-only call: May be preferable when seeing one another adds little, video is tiring, bandwidth is limited, or your equipment cannot support video. For a telehealth appointment, ask the provider whether a phone visit is appropriate; it may not be suitable for every health concern.
Before shopping, open the meeting application’s camera settings or preview and confirm that the device appears. Zoom’s system requirements distinguish camera support from the separate requirements for speakers, a microphone and network connectivity. Zoom’s system requirements describe supported camera options. The exact setup can vary by app and device.
When is video useful, and when is audio enough?
Choose video when seeing faces or demonstrations is relevant to the task, when the other participants expect a visual conversation, or when an accessibility need makes visual cues helpful. Choose audio, chat or email when a live image does not improve the exchange or when video creates a barrier.

Situations where video can help
- Interviews and presentations: In the 2021 Zoom/Morning Consult survey, 66% of respondents said they turned video on most or all of the time when interviewing a candidate. That describes reported behavior in that survey, not a rule for current hiring practice.
- Hybrid collaboration: Seeing a speaker’s face and reactions can help remote attendees follow a discussion, particularly when some participants are physically together and others join remotely.
- Telehealth: HHS says most telehealth visits need a device with video and sound, but a computer, smartphone or tablet may provide both. Whether video or telephone is suitable depends on the visit and provider.
- Visual accessibility: The National Science Foundation recommends turning on a webcam while speaking for attendees who rely on lipreading and nonverbal cues. This supports camera use when it helps a participant; it is not a reason to demand continuous video from everyone. NSF virtual-meeting guidance covers accessible participation.
Situations where another format may be better
Video is not automatically the clearest or most considerate format. In the same 2021 survey, 71% of respondents said information on some video calls would have been better sent by chat or email. Zoom also acknowledges video fatigue. A quick internal question, a simple update or a message that needs no immediate discussion may be easier to handle asynchronously. For a telehealth issue, ask the provider before substituting a phone call: HHS notes that telephone visits may not suit every health problem.
What should I look for in an external webcam?
Start with the problem you want to solve rather than the biggest resolution number. Compatibility, placement, field of view, lighting and privacy can matter more to a particular setup than a higher pixel count. Manufacturer and platform specifications describe features; they are not a hands-on comparison or a promise of how a specific call will look.
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Whether your computer has the camera’s USB-A or USB-C port, and whether its operating system is compatible. | A connector mismatch or compatibility issue can prevent a camera from working without an appropriate adapter or supported software. |
| Position and framing | Whether you can place the camera near eye level and whether its field of view suits one person or a wider space. | A camera that can be positioned well may be more useful than one with a higher resolution but an awkward angle. |
| Light | How the camera handles the lighting available where you sit. | Front lighting generally makes your face easier to see than a bright window behind you. |
| Audio | Whether you will use the webcam’s microphone or separate speakers, a headset or another microphone. | Video does not replace the need for understandable sound; check audio devices separately. |
| Privacy | Whether the webcam includes a physical shutter and whether you can easily close it. | A shutter offers a direct way to cover the lens when you do not want it capturing video. |
| Call-service limits | The resolution and account, hardware, configuration and bandwidth conditions supported by your meeting platform. | A camera’s maximum capture resolution does not guarantee the same resolution will be sent during a call. |
For concrete specification examples, Logitech lists the C920s Pro HD webcam with 1080p at 30 frames per second, a fixed 78-degree field of view, autofocus, dual microphones and a privacy shutter. Logitech’s setup guide identifies the Brio 100 as USB-A and the Brio 300 as USB-C; Zoom’s hardware catalog lists the Brio 300 Series as a 1080p webcam with a noise-reducing microphone and integrated shutter, and also lists a Brio 4K. These details can help you match a feature to a need, but they do not establish that one model is better for every caller. Logitech’s C920s specifications are the product details for that model.

Will a 4K webcam make my video calls 4K?
Not necessarily. A camera’s capture specification and a meeting service’s outgoing video resolution are different things. Zoom documents account, configuration, computing and bandwidth conditions for HD and Full HD, so a 4K-capable camera alone does not ensure a 4K call. Check the platform’s current requirements and the settings available to your account before paying for higher capture resolution. Zoom’s HD-video requirements explain conditions for its supported resolutions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Zoom lists 1.2 Mbps up and down for a one-to-one 720p call, and 3.8 Mbps sending and 3.0 Mbps receiving for 1080p. These are Zoom’s stated platform requirements, not measurements of typical household performance; the requirements were checked in 2026, while the original publication year was not established. If your connection or computer cannot meet the relevant conditions, buying a higher-resolution camera will not remove those limits.
How do I set up a webcam for a clear, comfortable call?
You can often improve a call without buying additional equipment. First make sure the application recognizes the camera, then adjust placement and light, and check sound independently.

- Choose the device and check compatibility. Connect the built-in camera or compatible USB webcam. Confirm the device and operating system meet the requirements for your call service.
- Select the camera in the meeting app. Open that app’s video settings or preview and choose the intended camera if more than one is available. Run the preview before an important call so you can catch a missing-device or wrong-camera problem.
- Place it near eye level. Frame your head and shoulders, with the camera close to the screen if possible. An external camera can help when the built-in camera’s position is inconvenient.
- Put light in front of you. A window or desk lamp near the monitor can provide light on your face. Avoid sitting with a bright window directly behind you, which can make your face harder to see. A new lighting purchase is optional.
- Check microphone and speakers separately. Select the intended audio devices in the app and confirm that other people can hear you. NSF suggests headphones or a headset microphone when possible, which can help keep audio components close to the speaker.
- Close the shutter when appropriate. If the camera has a physical privacy shutter, close it when you do not want the lens to capture video. A shutter covers the lens; do not treat it as protection against every kind of device compromise.
What privacy and accessibility choices should I consider?
Camera use is a choice that can affect both the person on screen and other participants. Explain when video is useful for a meeting, but allow people to participate without assuming that everyone can or should remain on camera. For an accessible meeting, offer visual cues when they help attendees who lipread or rely on nonverbal communication, and provide a way to participate if a camera is unavailable.
Recording raises a separate issue from whether your own camera is on. Section508.gov advises giving attendees time to turn their cameras and microphones off or disconnect before a meeting is recorded. Turning off your camera controls what you send; it does not by itself tell you whether a meeting is being recorded. Follow the meeting notice and the applicable service controls. Section508.gov provides accessible-meeting guidance.

Buy an external webcam only if it solves a real limitation that the device you own cannot. If your laptop camera works and its framing is acceptable, you may not need another one. If you want a camera that sits nearer eye level, need a particular port or field of view, or want a documented feature such as a physical shutter, compare those needs against the camera’s specifications and your platform’s limits.

- Keep using your current device if it is recognized by your app, frames you acceptably and supports the calls you make.
- Consider an external camera if positioning, connection, privacy or a specific camera feature is a genuine obstacle.
- Use audio-only or another format if video is unnecessary for the conversation, burdensome, inaccessible or unavailable. For medical care, confirm with the provider that a telephone visit fits the situation.
The practical answer is not that everyone needs a webcam. You need a working camera when the conversation benefits from your image or requires it; otherwise, use the camera you already have or choose an appropriate non-video format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my phone as a webcam for a computer meeting?
That depends on the operating system, phone and meeting app; the information here establishes that smartphones can be used directly for telehealth, not that every phone can act as a computer’s USB webcam. Check the app and device maker’s current compatibility instructions before relying on that arrangement.
Can I join a video meeting if my camera is broken?
Often, yes: many meeting services allow you to join with your microphone and speakers while video is off. For a telehealth visit, tell the provider about the problem and ask whether an audio-only option is suitable for the appointment.
Does covering a webcam stop a meeting from recording me?
Covering the lens prevents the camera from showing its view, but it does not control meeting recording or other participants’ recordings. Check the meeting’s recording notice and controls, and turn off or disconnect as appropriate before recording begins.
