Who needs to verify their age?
Sony’s requirement applies to adult accounts registered in the UK or Ireland, according to its official age-verification FAQ, updated June 1, 2026. It is not established as a worldwide requirement.
Verification is needed once per account. A new adult account may be prompted during creation; an existing adult account may be prompted when its user tries to access a feature that requires verification. Sony’s FAQ says the requirement is currently in effect but does not give a universal enforcement hour or a separate deadline for each account.
Sony says it is using verification “to deliver the best PlayStation experience for your age, and to help protect our younger users,” and says the policy is in line with local law and regulation. That statement is Sony’s rationale; the FAQ does not identify a specific legal provision governing each individual feature.

What features require age verification?
Sony lists these features as requiring verification for affected accounts:
- PlayStation-provided voice chat and text chat or messaging.
- Joining parties or sessions.
- Discord voice chat through PlayStation.
- Broadcasting gameplay to YouTube or Twitch through PlayStation.
- Some game-specific communication and user-generated-content features, such as in-game chat or messaging, and sharing or uploading content.
The game-specific restrictions can vary by title and may change when a game updates how its features work. Sony’s list does not mean every game’s chat or content-sharing feature is necessarily blocked.

What can you still do without verifying?
Sony says you can continue playing games and access and purchase from PlayStation Store. Choosing “Verify Age Later” lets you continue without completing verification immediately, but it does not unlock features that require verification.
The PlayStation App supports messaging and party voice chat. Sony’s app documentation does not say that using the app bypasses the age-verification requirement, so it should not be treated as a workaround.

How do you verify your age?
Start from the prompt on your PlayStation account and follow Sony’s verification flow. Sony names Yoti as its age-verification service provider and lists these methods:

The appropriate option depends on what you can access, such as the relevant mobile number or a valid ID. Sony’s FAQ does not rank the methods for accuracy, privacy, convenience, or security.

How is your personal information handled?
Sony identifies Yoti as the provider and directs users to Yoti’s privacy policy for details about submitted information. Sony says Yoti processes information provided for verification; the information in Sony’s FAQ does not establish further details about retention or processing.
Which browser should you use?
Sony recommends the latest version of these browsers for the verification flow:
- Android: Chrome.
- iOS: Safari.
- Mac: Chrome or Safari.
- Windows: Chrome or Edge.
These are Sony’s recommendations, not a statement that other browsers are incompatible.
What if the account was created for someone under 18?
If an adult account was created for someone under 18, Sony says the account needs to be updated to the appropriate account type, with a parent or guardian managing that process. Use the official PlayStation account and support flow; do not attempt adult verification for a child account.
