Usually, peel thick or inedible skins and remove hard pits or stones before juicing. Whether to remove an apple core or softer seeds depends on your juicer’s instructions. Wash all produce first—even fruit you plan to peel.
Wash produce before peeling, cutting, or juicing
Rinse fruit and vegetables under running water before preparing them. Dirt and bacteria on the surface can transfer to the flesh when you cut or peel the produce, so peeling does not replace washing. For firm produce such as melons and cucumbers, the FDA recommends scrubbing with a clean produce brush.
Which produce should you peel?
Remove thick or inedible skins
Peel skins you would normally discard or that are too tough for your juicer. Philips lists oranges, pineapples, kiwis, melons, pomegranates, and uncooked beetroot as examples; Breville gives similar advice for hard or inedible skins such as mango, citrus, melon, and pineapple. Peel citrus and consider removing the pith
Peel citrus before juicing. Philips advises peeling because the skin may have been chemically treated and the white pith can taste bitter; it recommends removing pith for flavor. Breville also advises removing citrus skin and excess pith. Wash the fruit before peeling it.

Thin, normally edible skins are a separate case
There is no need to assume every fruit must be peeled. Sana says apples and pears can be juiced with their skins, while Philips’ guidance for its listed models allows some produce, including apples, melons, and grapes, to go in without removing cores or seeds. For other produce and models, follow the appliance manual.
Which pits, seeds, and cores should you remove?
Remove hard pits and stones
Take out large, hard pits or stones before juicing. Breville names peaches, nectarines, mangoes, apricots, plums, and cherries; Philips also says to remove stones from cherries, plums, and peaches. These instructions are manufacturer guidance, so consult the manual for your juicer’s specific requirements.

Apple and pear cores are model-dependent
Apple cores are not a universal juicer requirement. Philips says cores or seeds need not be removed from apples, melons, and grapes on the models covered by its guidance. Sana recommends using an apple slicer to remove apple and pear cores, citing trace amounts of cyanide in their seeds. Treat this as Sana’s recommendation, not a rule that applies to every juicer. An apple or pear corer can make that preparation easier if you choose to follow it, but it is not essential for all appliances.
Why the juicer manual matters
Manufacturers give different levels of detail, and their directions can differ for cores, hard seeds, and skins. Juicer design affects what its maker recommends, so use the manual for edge cases rather than relying on a single rule for every appliance. Taste is another consideration: citrus pith can make juice bitter even when a machine can process it.

Preparation does not make raw juice pathogen-free
Washing and peeling are produce-preparation steps, not a guarantee that juice is free of pathogens. The FDA notes that outbreaks of foodborne illness have been linked to untreated juice and cider, and that some juice sold by the glass may not carry a warning label.
