No special “lossless” headphones are required. For Apple Music lossless, use a wired headphone or a compatible speaker; ordinary Bluetooth playback is not lossless. You usually do not need to buy a DAC for standard Lossless, which reaches 24-bit/48 kHz. A DAC may be required for higher-than-48-kHz playback, depending on your device.

What you need for Apple Music lossless

Apple Music’s lossless tracks use ALAC, with catalog resolutions ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz. You do not need headphones marketed specifically as “lossless”: Apple lists wired headphones, receivers, powered speakers, and built-in speakers as playback options on supported devices. The connection and the device’s output capabilities matter more than a special headphone label. Apple’s lossless audio guidance explains supported playback paths and requirements.

Apple offers two quality settings: Lossless, up to 24-bit/48 kHz, and Hi-Res Lossless, up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Standard Lossless therefore does not, by itself, call for an external DAC. A DAC becomes relevant when your device cannot output the higher resolution you want without one.

Does Apple Music lossless work over Bluetooth?

No. Apple states, “However, Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless.” A lossless source does not make the Bluetooth connection lossless; ordinary Bluetooth listening with AirPods or most Beats headphones is not lossless either. Apple describes AAC Bluetooth playback as virtually indistinguishable from lossless, but that is Apple’s characterization, not a guarantee that every listener will hear the same result.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

Apple documents a narrow exception: certain AirPods models can use a proprietary wireless protocol for lossless audio with ultra-low latency when paired with Apple Vision Pro. This Vision Pro-specific case should not be taken to mean lossless Bluetooth playback is available from an iPhone or other ordinary host.

Apple also says AirPods Max 1 (USB-C) and AirPods Max 2 can play lossless when physically connected to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the included USB-C cable, with current device software and headphone firmware. That is wired playback, not lossless Bluetooth.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with 3.5mm Headphone Plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

When do you need an external DAC?

Apple’s threshold is above 48 kHz. Whether you need an external DAC depends on the platform and the resolution you want: standard Lossless tops out at 48 kHz, while Hi-Res Lossless can go higher. Apple’s current guidance, published September 29, 2026, gives these platform-specific details:

Device What Apple documents When an external DAC may be needed
iPhone or iPad Current iOS/iPadOS and a wired output, receiver, powered speaker, or built-in speaker. Apple specifies an external DAC for playback above 48 kHz.
Mac Current macOS; wired output or built-in speakers. 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models support native playback up to 96 kHz. Other Macs need an external DAC above 48 kHz.
Android Latest Apple Music app and compatible wired output. An external DAC may be needed above 48 kHz; Apple recommends checking with the device manufacturer.
Windows PC Apple Music for Windows and compatible wired output or built-in speakers. Apple specifies an external DAC above 48 kHz and recommends checking with the PC maker.
Apple TV 4K Updated tvOS and HDMI connection to an AV receiver. Hi-Res Lossless is available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later); Apple’s listed setup uses the HDMI-connected receiver.
HomePod or HomePod mini Updated software and configuration in the Home app on the iPhone or iPad used for setup. Apple’s listed setup does not imply a headphone or external-DAC purchase.
Apple Vision Pro Built-in speakers or Apple’s listed AirPods-family devices. Apple lists the specific Vision Pro wireless lossless case; it is not a general Bluetooth capability.

For a standard Lossless setting capped at 24-bit/48 kHz, these above-48-kHz DAC requirements generally do not apply. If you want Hi-Res Lossless, check the exact device, operating system, output connection, and DAC compatibility before buying anything. Apple does not endorse a particular third-party DAC model in this guidance.

How to turn on Lossless and get lossless downloads

Use the setting for your device:

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality > Lossless Audio.
  • Mac: Music > Preferences > Playback > Lossless audio.
  • Android: Apple Music > More > Settings > Audio Quality > Lossless.
  • Windows: Apple Music > Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback > Lossless audio.

On iPhone, the Lossless badge indicates availability on an album and can appear in Now Playing after Lossless is enabled. Apple notes that streamed quality depends on whether the song is available in that quality, network conditions, and the capability of the connected headphones or speakers. Lossless streaming uses significantly more data, and lossless downloads use significantly more storage; Apple’s cited guidance does not give a specific data-per-hour figure.

Turning on Lossless does not convert tracks already downloaded to your device. Delete those Apple Music downloads and download the tracks again to obtain the lossless versions.

Should you buy headphones or a DAC?

  • You want ordinary lossless playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz: start with a wired headphone or compatible speaker you already own. A special “lossless” headphone label or external DAC is not automatically necessary.
  • You listen over Bluetooth: you can keep using Bluetooth, but the connection will not be lossless. Use a wired connection if lossless output is the goal.
  • You want playback above 48 kHz: check your platform’s DAC requirement and confirm that the DAC connects to your device before choosing one.
  • You use AirPods Max: the documented lossless option is a physical USB-C cable for the supported USB-C models, with current software and firmware—not Bluetooth.
