When the paid membership period ends, those games become unavailable through the service, even if they remain associated with your account. Canceling auto-renewal does not end access early: benefits continue until the period you already paid for expires.
What happens to monthly games when PS Plus expires?
PlayStation Support says that after a subscription ends, content downloaded at no cost as part of PS Plus, including monthly games, is no longer available. The game is not the same as a purchase: claiming it adds the monthly benefit to your account, but does not make it a permanent, independently playable copy. If you later have an eligible active membership again, you can regain access to the monthly game through PS Plus, subject to the account and service terms.

Does canceling PS Plus remove access right away?
No. Turning off auto-renewal or canceling does not immediately end the benefits in the subscription period you have already paid for. You can continue using membership benefits until that payment period expires. Once it ends, monthly games claimed at no extra cost become unavailable until eligible membership access resumes. Is a monthly game different from a Game Catalog title?
Yes. Monthly games are a PS Plus benefit claimed for the month; Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles are subscription-library games available through particular tiers. A catalog game requires the relevant membership tier and must still be in the catalog. Sony may announce end dates for catalog titles, after which they leave the service. That is different from a monthly game becoming unavailable because your membership expired.
Check how the game is listed in your library or on its store page. If it is a monthly game you claimed, membership status is the key issue. If it is a catalog title, check both whether it is still included and whether your plan provides access. See Sony’s PS Plus game-library information.

What if you bought the game at a PS Plus discount?
A discounted purchase is different from a monthly game claimed at no extra cost. Sony says games bought at a PS Plus discount remain yours after the subscription ends. The same support guidance says redeemed PS Plus packs and avatars remain yours as well. The distinction is whether you completed a purchase or claimed a subscription benefit: PlayStation Support’s explanation of what remains available.

- Identify how you got the game. Check whether it was a monthly game, a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title, or a purchase made at a PS Plus discount.
- Check your membership. If it was a monthly claim and your membership has expired, restore an eligible active membership to regain access through PS Plus.
- For a catalog title, check availability and tier. Confirm that the game has not left the catalog and that your current plan includes the relevant catalog.
- For a discounted purchase, check the purchasing account. A game bought at a discount is retained by the account that purchased it; it is not dependent on the monthly-game benefit.
Plan names, catalog lineups, and terms can vary by region and change over time. The cited pages include U.S. monthly-game and library guidance and U.K. cancellation guidance, so check the PlayStation support page for your region for current account-specific details.
