No. You can watch the Apple TV app without owning an Apple TV box. It works on compatible smart TVs and streaming devices, as well as computers, phones, tablets, gaming consoles, and the web. If your TV does not support the app, you can also watch at tv.apple.com in a browser.
Apple TV can mean the app, the service, or the box
Apple uses “Apple TV” for three different things: Apple TV hardware, the Apple TV app, and Apple TV subscription programming. The box is just one way to access the app; it is not required to use the app or watch eligible content.
Apple lists compatible smart TVs and streaming devices, Apple TV hardware, gaming consoles, iPhone and iPad, Mac, Windows PCs, Android devices, and web browsers as viewing options. Device support and available features vary by model and country or region, so check the exact device rather than assuming every model in a product family is supported. Use a compatible smart TV or streaming device
Apple says the app is available on supported TVs and devices from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, VIZIO, Hisense/VIDAA, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, and Google TV. The examples do not guarantee support for every model or feature. Search for “Apple TV” in your TV or streaming device’s app store, or check the manufacturer’s compatibility information.

- Open the TV or streaming device’s home screen or app store and find the Apple TV app.
- Install or open the app, then sign in with your Apple Account.
- Choose the subscription program, channel, rental, or purchase you want to watch.

Watch in a browser
If you do not have a compatible TV or streaming device, open tv.apple.com in a web browser and sign in. This avoids buying an Apple TV box, though what you can watch still depends on the content and your account.

Use a phone, tablet, computer, or console
Apple also supports viewing through the Apple TV app on compatible Apple and other devices, including phones, tablets, computers, and gaming consoles. Check Apple’s device and regional guidance to confirm support for your particular model.
What “movies in the Apple TV app” means
The app brings together several kinds of content, but it does not make every movie free. Apple describes the app as a place to watch Apple TV subscription programming, optional Apple TV channels, and movies available to rent or buy in the Apple TV Store. Its Library also includes titles you have acquired. A movie may be included with a subscription, offered through a separate channel, or require a separate rental or purchase; check the listing for the specific title.

An Apple TV subscription does not include third-party branded subscription services or content that the app offers separately to rent or buy. The app is both a viewing interface and a storefront, so having access to it does not by itself mean you have access to every title. Can you buy or rent inside the TV app?
Not always. Some smart TVs and streaming devices support playback but do not allow purchases or subscriptions inside the app. If the transaction option is unavailable, buy or rent the title or start the subscription on another supported device using the same Apple Account. Then sign into the Apple TV app on the TV with that account to watch eligible content.

When an Apple TV box or another streamer makes sense
A separate streaming device is optional. It can be useful if your TV does not have the Apple TV app or if you want a device with features your current setup lacks. A compatible Fire TV or another supported streamer can add apps to a TV; an Apple TV 4K is another option, not a prerequisite. Before choosing hardware, verify that it supports the app and the features you need, such as 4K or HDR, and check current model details and prices with the manufacturer or retailer.
