But an iPad does not make the MacBook’s built-in screen touch-enabled. Apple’s cited MacBook Air specifications list a keyboard and Force Touch trackpad, not direct touchscreen input. With Sidecar, a compatible iPad can instead act as a second Mac display and an input surface for some Mac workflows.
MacBook screen touch and iPad touch are different
Tapping the MacBook’s display and touching an iPad used alongside the Mac are separate workflows. Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications list the computer’s built-in display, keyboard, and Force Touch trackpad; they do not list direct touchscreen input for that specification. This is a statement about the cited MacBook Air specifications, not a model-by-model audit of every Mac. If touching the laptop screen itself is essential, check the specifications for the exact computer before buying.
Which Apple workflow fits the task?

Sidecar is the closer fit if your goal is to interact with Mac content on the iPad. Universal Control is for controlling both devices as separate computers from shared input hardware. Apple explains the distinction in its Sidecar guide and Universal Control guide.
Choose based on what you want to touch
If you need to tap the MacBook display
Neither Sidecar nor Universal Control makes the laptop’s own screen touch-sensitive. Do not assume the MacBook Air specification cited here includes direct screen touch; verify the exact computer’s current input specifications if that is a must-have.

If you draw, annotate, or select while using Mac apps
Try Sidecar with your iPad before considering another device. Apple documents Apple Pencil use for tasks such as drawing and selecting, but that does not establish that every Mac app supports every iPad touch gesture or Pencil interaction. Check current device and operating-system requirements in Apple’s Sidecar support page.
An Apple Pencil is optional. If you already own one, check that it is compatible with your iPad; if you do not, consider buying one only if pen input matters to the work you actually do. Pencil input on the iPad is not laptop-screen touch.

If you want the Mac and iPad apps open at once
Use Universal Control when you want each device to keep its own screen and apps, with a shared keyboard, mouse, or trackpad for moving between them. Choose Sidecar instead when you want the iPad to function as an extra display for the Mac.

- Identify the specific task for which you want touch: tapping the MacBook screen, drawing or marking up Mac content, or moving between Mac and iPad apps.
- If the task is drawing, markup, selection, or extra screen space, check Apple’s current Sidecar requirements for your devices and operating systems, then try the feature.
- If you want to control native apps on both devices, check Apple’s Universal Control requirements and try that workflow.
- Keep a touchscreen laptop on your shortlist only if direct touch on the built-in laptop display remains necessary after testing the iPad workflow.
Apple’s Continuity features and requirements page is another place to check current compatibility details. Requirements and supported interactions can depend on the devices and software versions involved.
