Sometimes—but it depends on the game. Some MMORPGs let you play the base game for free or keep playing without recurring payments; others offer only a limited free trial before requiring a subscription. A premium membership may be optional, while expansions and downloadable content (DLC) can unlock additional content without being required for base-game access. Check the current terms for your specific game, platform, account, and edition before paying.
What the payment labels mean
Marketing terms alone do not tell you what it costs to keep playing. Check whether a game charges for initial access, continued access, extra content, or optional benefits. Those are separate questions.
- Free-to-play: You can start without buying the game. Free accounts may have restrictions, and optional purchases or memberships may be available.
- Buy-to-play: You pay to access the game or an edition. That purchase does not necessarily include every expansion or establish that future play time is included indefinitely.
- Subscription required: You may need recurring game time to continue after any included trial or access period.
- Optional premium membership: It adds specified benefits but is not required for ordinary access to the game.
How policies differ across MMORPGs
These official examples show why there is no one rule for the genre. Policies and benefits can change, so check each publisher’s current terms for your region and platform.
| Game | Starting or continued access | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars 2 | The official support page says players can play the core game for free and continue without spending more. It also describes a one-time expansion purchase as an option, rather than a recurring payment requirement. Guild Wars 2: Play for Free | Free accounts have restrictions compared with upgraded accounts. Review the current account-feature differences if communication or other account functions matter to you. Guild Wars 2 account types |
| World of Warcraft | Blizzard says an active subscription is required for most modes, with a limited Free Trial exception. World of Warcraft modes and versions | Confirm what the trial includes and which mode you intend to play; trial access is not the same as unrestricted ongoing access. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Square Enix says Starter and Complete Edition purchases include 30 days of free play time; a subscription is required to continue afterward. Final Fantasy XIV product information | Check current regional and platform terms, including any game-time-card or code conditions. The product information also lists an Xbox Game Pass plan requirement for Xbox play, so verify the current requirement for your chosen platform. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | ESO Plus is described as an optional membership, not a prerequisite for base-game access. ESO support says DLC game packs are not required to access the full version of the base game. ESO: Is ESO Plus required? ESO: Are DLC game packs required? | ESO Plus includes benefits such as access to Crown Store DLC game packs while the membership lasts. Check the current benefit list and what happens to access when membership ends. |
Does buying an edition cover future play time?
Not necessarily. A purchase labeled “Complete Edition” or “Premium” does not, by itself, prove that you can play indefinitely without another payment. Final Fantasy XIV, for example, says Starter and Complete Edition purchases include a 30-day free play period and require a subscription afterward. For any edition, look for an explicit statement about included play time and what payment is needed when that period ends.

Are expansions and DLC required?
That depends on what you want to access. A game may let you play its base version without buying expansions, while reserving newer areas, quests, or other content for paid add-ons. An expansion purchase and a subscription are different charges: buying content does not automatically waive a recurring access fee where one is required. ESO support, for instance, says DLC game packs are not necessary to access the full base game, while ESO Plus provides access to those packs for the length of the membership.

How to check a game’s real cost before you start
- Open the publisher’s current product or support page. Confirm the exact game, region, platform, and account type; third-party descriptions may not reflect the latest rules.
- Find the starting-access terms. Check whether you can create a free account, must buy an edition, or can only begin with a trial.
- Read the trial end conditions. Confirm when it ends, what content it includes, and whether a subscription or purchase is required afterward.
- Separate access fees from content purchases. Check whether continued play requires recurring game time and whether expansions or DLC are needed for the content you want.
- Inspect optional membership benefits. Identify what the membership adds and whether benefits—such as DLC access—end when it expires.
- Verify platform-specific requirements before paying. Console or platform account terms can differ from other versions and can change.
Quick decision guide
- If you want to play indefinitely without recurring payments, look for an explicit statement that continued access is free after any initial purchase or trial.
- If a game offers a free trial, treat it as temporary until the publisher confirms otherwise.
- If you only want the base game, check whether expansions and DLC are optional for that content.
- If a premium membership is offered, verify that it is optional and review which benefits last only while subscribed.
