Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor previews inside the Netflix app, you should expect to need a Netflix membership. Netflix describes those previews as part of browsing its subscription-based service, though its help pages do not state a universal rule for every trailer, title, device, or region. Trailers published publicly elsewhere—such as on another video platform—follow that platform’s access rules and may be watchable without Netflix.
The distinction matters: a public movie trailer and a clip that plays while you browse Netflix are not necessarily the same thing.

Netflix trailers and Netflix previews are different
People use “Netflix trailer” to mean either a conventional trailer posted publicly online or one of Netflix’s in-app video previews. Netflix has historically described its browsing clips as previews rather than traditional trailers. In its 2016 TV experience announcement, the company wrote that “video previews aren’t teasers or traditional trailers.” That was a description of the TV browsing experience at the time, not a guarantee about every current clip.
Netflix’s product pages describe the service as subscription-based and frame previews as part of discovering shows and movies as a member. Taken together, that supports the practical conclusion that you generally need to be signed in as a member to watch previews in the Netflix app. It does not establish a blanket rule for every link labelled “trailer.”

If a studio, distributor, or Netflix has posted a conventional trailer publicly on another platform, you can watch it under that platform’s rules; a Netflix subscription is not inherently required just because the trailer is for a Netflix title.
Can you watch Netflix previews without paying?
Netflix says it does not offer free trials. Its published information therefore does not provide a trial period for accessing member features such as in-app previews. Netflix also says members can change plans or cancel online at any time, but cancellation is not the same as a free trial.

For a clip you found outside the Netflix app, check the host page: access depends on that service and the specific video, not simply on whether you have a Netflix account.
Does your Netflix plan affect previews?
The cited Netflix information does not say that you need a particular plan tier to view previews, or that paying for a more expensive plan unlocks them. Plan differences are principally about advertising, some title availability, simultaneous devices, picture quality, downloads, extra members, and audio features.

Netflix’s English-language US plan page listed these options on October 7, 2026. Prices below are US-dollar monthly listings, not worldwide prices. Netflix cautions that prices and extra-member eligibility can vary by location or when the service comes through a package or add-on. Taxes may apply.
| US plan (monthly) | Ads and content | Devices at once | Resolution | Downloads | Extra members and other features |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads — $8.99/month | Ad-supported; most movies and shows and all games are available. Unavailable titles show a lock icon. | 2 supported devices | 1080p Full HD | On 2 supported devices | Extra-member option not listed for this plan on the cited page. |
| Standard — $19.99/month | Ad-free movies, shows, and games | 2 supported devices | 1080p Full HD | On 2 supported devices | Option to add 1 extra member who does not live with the account holder. |
| Premium — $26.99/month | Ad-free movies, shows, and games | 4 supported devices | 4K Ultra HD plus HDR | On 6 supported devices | Option to add up to 2 extra members; Netflix spatial audio. |
The same US-dollar listing gives extra-member charges of $7.99/month with ads or $9.99/month without ads per extra member. Netflix says the Basic plan has been discontinued. Check Netflix’s plan page for your country and billing arrangement rather than applying US prices elsewhere.

How to turn off autoplay previews
If the issue is that clips start playing while you browse, Netflix provides an Autoplay Previews preference in profile settings. The setting controls automatic playback; it does not establish that every preview is available for manual playback on every device.
- In the Netflix mobile app: open the app, choose the profile you want to change, and go to the profile’s playback settings. Turn Autoplay Previews off.
- In a browser: open your Netflix account settings, select the profile, open playback settings, and clear Autoplay Previews.
Netflix notes that iPads and some older TVs and TV streaming devices do not support preview autoplay. If you do not see the option or previews behave differently on a device, that device limitation may be relevant.

How long are Netflix previews?
Netflix’s global announcement for mobile previews, published April 19, 2018, described each preview as about 30 seconds long. That is a dated figure for the mobile-preview format announced then, not a current universal length for every Netflix preview or conventional trailer.
