Harvard’s CS50x 2026 is designed for learners with and without previous programming experience, and it starts with C. But C’s pointers and memory concepts can make it a demanding first language, so beginners can either tackle it with a structured course or start with a language that manages memory automatically.
Can you learn C without a degree?
Yes. A degree is not a prerequisite for learning the language. CS50x is open to people who are not computer science concentrators, and its course materials are available through free OpenCourseWare. Its page also says that two thirds of CS50 students have never taken computer science before; that figure describes CS50 students, not all C learners or all people without degrees. Learning C and earning a degree are separate questions. The sources here describe ways to start learning; they do not establish job prospects, career requirements, or whether a degree is useful for a particular role.
Can a complete beginner learn C?
Yes, though the learning curve may be steeper than with some other languages. CS50x begins with C and says prior programming experience is not required, making it a guided option for beginners. GNU’s C manual offers a different but compatible caution: pointers are explicit in C, and a person with no programming background may find it easier to begin with a language that manages memory automatically.

That is advice about approach, not a requirement. Starting with another language may make early programming concepts feel more approachable; starting directly with C gets you working with C’s concepts sooner.
Choose a route that fits your starting point

A free, structured way to start
CS50x 2026 OpenCourseWare is a concrete starting point if you want to learn C within a broader introduction to computer science. Its syllabus describes lectures, walkthroughs, ten problem sets, and a final project. It says the course is free to take and allows submissions for automated feedback. Check the current CS50x syllabus for the exact submission process and any certificate conditions; those may differ from free OpenCourseWare access.

- Open the CS50x course materials. Begin with the current course page and follow its sequence rather than trying to learn every C feature at once.
- Work through the lectures and walkthroughs. Use them to connect the language concepts to the course examples.
- Attempt the problem sets. The syllabus describes ten problem sets and permits submissions for automated feedback.
- Complete the final project. Use it to apply what you have learned; consult the syllabus for current requirements.
For questions about C itself or compiling programs, use Microsoft’s C documentation, which includes language references and a command-line compilation tutorial. GNU’s manual can also be read sequentially once you understand basic programming concepts, while keeping its beginner caution about pointers in mind.

No book is required to begin CS50x. The syllabus says books are neither required nor recommended, though it lists Stephen G. Kochan’s Programming in C, Fourth Edition as a title some readers may find interesting. It also notes that the free course materials may be superior.
