GPS handles positioning; LTE is a separate feature on LTE-capable watch models. You need an eligible carrier plan only if you want LTE features such as calls and messages when the watch is away from its phone.
GPS and LTE do different jobs
GPS lets the watch determine its location for supported features, including workout tracking. It does not provide mobile service. Samsung treats GPS and LTE as separate capabilities, so you can use GPS without activating LTE service. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch support guidance.
LTE connects a compatible watch to a mobile carrier. With service activated, an LTE model can support calls and messages away from a direct phone connection, subject to the watch model, carrier, plan and local coverage. A Bluetooth-only model cannot use LTE service.
Choose based on whether you need connectivity away from your phone

What to check before activating LTE
Confirm the watch is an LTE model
Carrier service is available only on eligible LTE versions; a Bluetooth-only Galaxy Watch cannot be activated for LTE. Model support differs by market, so check the complete model number and country rather than relying only on a product family name.

Confirm carrier and account compatibility
Samsung says carrier plans and connection methods vary. Ask the carrier whether it supports the exact watch model on your account and whether the plan enables the functions you expect. Do not assume standalone voice calling works everywhere: Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 Classic specifications warn that carrier voice support may be unavailable or limited in some areas.
Use the requirements for your specific watch generation
Samsung’s U.S. LTE activation guidance says the phone used for activation should run Android 5.0 or later, have at least 1.5 GB of RAM, and have an internet connection available during setup. These are Samsung’s stated U.S. activation requirements; follow the current instructions for your model and carrier.

For the Galaxy Watch6 Classic specifically, Samsung’s 2023 specification sheet says standalone LTE connectivity, calls and messages require initial pairing with an eligible smartphone running Android 10.0 or later and a separate qualifying wireless plan. If you want GPS for workouts or location features, you do not need to pay for a carrier plan just to use GPS. Consider LTE only when you want the watch to connect to mobile service away from your phone, and verify that the exact model and plan are supported in your country before buying or activating it.
