Short answer: You need cache protection when a hardware RAID controller is using write-back cache and acknowledges writes before they reach the drives. A battery is one solution; flash-backed cache, a supercapacitor energy pack, or write-through mode are others. You do not need a RAID battery merely because a card is labeled “RAID,” and a UPS is helpful but not an equivalent substitute.
What a RAID-card battery actually protects
The module protects the controller’s volatile write cache, usually DRAM. In write-back mode, the controller can tell the operating system that a write is complete while the data is still in that cache. A power interruption, server failure, reset, kernel panic, or controller fault before the cache is flushed can therefore lose an acknowledged write and leave filesystem or RAID metadata inconsistent. Broadcom describes this risk in its cache-protection documentation: cached writes remain vulnerable until they become permanent on disk. The module does not run the disks for hours, preserve data already committed to the drives, or replace backups. It is also different from a UPS, a drive’s internal write cache, RAID redundancy, and a backup copy.
Write-through versus write-back
Write-through
The controller waits for the storage path to accept the data before acknowledging the write. This avoids the specific danger of unprotected controller write-back cache and removes dependence on battery health. The trade-off is lower write performance, especially for synchronous database and virtual-machine I/O, metadata-heavy filesystems, and parity RAID.

Write-back
The controller acknowledges from fast cache and flushes data later. This can greatly improve burst performance and latency, but it is safe only when the cache-protection mechanism is present, healthy, and supported. Intel warns that write-back without a functioning backup module is not recommended because an interruption or related system fault can cause data loss: Intel support guidance.
Never use a “force write-back” option to recover performance from a failed battery. That setting deliberately bypasses the controller’s safety fallback.
When you need protected cache

Battery, flash, and supercapacitor options
BBU and BBWC
A battery backup unit (BBU) keeps controller DRAM powered during an outage. Traditional battery-backed write cache (BBWC) therefore needs backup power throughout the outage. A historical Broadcom product brief describes retention of up to 72 hours and battery replacement roughly every one to two years, with charging and capacity-test times in that vendor design; these are not universal specifications. FBWC
Flash-backed write cache uses a battery or capacitor only long enough to copy DRAM contents into nonvolatile flash. The flash then retains the data until the controller can restore and flush it. HPE distinguishes this short transfer requirement from BBWC’s need for sustained backup power: HPE’s FBWC explanation.

Broadcom CacheVault systems combine NAND flash with a supercapacitor. The capacitor powers the DRAM-to-flash transfer; it is not intended to power the server or disks. Broadcom describes the technology at this CacheVault overview. Such designs can avoid conventional lithium-ion battery replacement, although the capacitor and controller still have finite service lives.
Why a UPS is not a replacement
A UPS can bridge short utility failures, keep the server and network equipment powered, and signal an orderly operating-system shutdown. It cannot guarantee protection from a kernel panic, blue screen, hard reset, failed power supply, loose cable, controller firmware crash, UPS failure, or a host that remains powered but stops servicing I/O. Broadcom explicitly describes cache protection as covering power or server failure: Broadcom cache-protection information.

Use both layers where the data matters: protected write-back cache for acknowledged controller writes, and a UPS for whole-system runtime and graceful shutdown.
How to check your own controller
- Identify the exact model and revision. Use the card label, server inventory, BIOS/UEFI, Linux PCI information, Windows Device Manager, or the vendor management utility. “8-port LSI” or “Dell RAID” is not precise enough.
- Inspect the active cache policy. Look for Write-back, Write-through, write cache, BBU, FBWC, CacheVault, energy pack, or cache-preservation fields.
- Check protection health. The expected state is typically Battery or Cache protection “Optimal,” “Ready,” or “Healthy,” with the module present and charged. A battery-present message alone does not prove that it is usable.
- Confirm the operating mode. A card flashed or configured as an HBA may not be using its RAID write cache, making a battery accessory irrelevant.
- Review drive-cache settings separately. Controller cache protection does not automatically make an individual HDD or SSD’s volatile write cache safe. The correct policy depends on the drive, firmware, controller, and filesystem; do not apply a universal toggle without platform documentation.
For LSI controllers, write-back with BBU requires the module to be attached, enabled, and ready, according to Broadcom’s guidance.

If the battery is missing or failed
- Do not force write-back.
- Let the controller use write-through.
- Purchase the exact supported battery, capacitor, or flash-cache part.
- Wait for the new module to reach its healthy or ready state.
- Verify that the intended write policy has returned.
- Review controller logs and, after an unclean event, check filesystem and application consistency as appropriate.
- Confirm that current backups are readable.
A failed module does not automatically mean the array is damaged; many controllers simply disable write-back. Risk is higher if write-back was forced during an outage.

Compatibility is mandatory
Do not buy a generic “RAID battery.” Match the controller model and revision, cache generation, connector and cable, firmware, mounting hardware, chassis integration, and vendor monitoring system. Broadcom lists CVPM05 (05-50039-00) for specified MegaRAID 9560, 9580, 9660, and 9670 families, and CVPM33 (05-50169-00) for the 9760 series; its compatibility matrix is authoritative. OEM ecosystems differ. HPE Smart Array systems may require a Smart Storage Battery or Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor (HPE information), while Dell PERC controllers use model-specific cache-preservation hardware (Dell documentation). Adaptec compatibility is likewise controller-specific: Adaptec’s list.

When the operating system manages RAID and the adapter presents disks without controller write-back, there is no controller cache battery to protect. Focus on UPS signaling, correct flush semantics, drive power-loss protection where applicable, backups, and replication.

ZFS and similar designs commonly favor an HBA or explicitly supported passthrough arrangement rather than opaque hardware RAID. There is no universal battery rule: verify whether the selected mode has active write-back cache and whether it matches the storage software’s requirements.
RAID is not a backup
Protected cache helps preserve acknowledged writes during specified failures, but it cannot recover deleted files, ransomware-encrypted data, filesystem bugs, fire, theft, administrator mistakes, an unimportable controller, or drive failures beyond the array’s tolerance. Keep independent backups, monitor battery or capacitor health, plan replacement parts, and test restoration.

The Bottom Line
If your RAID controller uses write-back cache, install and monitor the exact compatible protection module—or switch to write-through. If it has no active controller write-back cache, a RAID battery is unnecessary. In valuable or always-on systems, pair protected cache with a UPS and independent backups.
