Usually, no. A normal in-place upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is designed to keep your personal files, installed applications, and Windows settings. In Windows 11 Setup, the default option at Ready to install is Keep personal files and apps.

Files are at risk when you choose a removal option, boot from installation media for a clean installation, format the Windows drive, or reset the PC. You should still back up important files before upgrading because an interrupted or failed installation can create problems that the normal upgrade process is designed to avoid.

What happens to your files in a normal Windows 11 upgrade?

If you start the upgrade from your existing Windows installation and accept the correct Setup option, Windows 11 replaces the Windows installation while carrying your personal data, apps, and settings forward.

At the decisive Setup screen, select:

Ready to install → Change what to keep → Keep personal files and apps

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

This option preserves:

  • Personal files, including documents, pictures, videos, and files on the desktop
  • Installed applications
  • Windows settings

Do not assume that every method described as an “upgrade” has the same result. The option selected in Setup, and whether you start Setup from inside Windows or boot directly from installation media, determines what is retained.

The three “Change what to keep” choices

Setup choice Personal files Installed apps Windows settings
Keep personal files and apps Kept Kept Kept
Keep personal files only Kept Removed Removed
Nothing Removed from the new installation Removed Removed

These choices appear after selecting Change what to keep on the Ready to install screen. Read this screen carefully before selecting Install. If Setup does not offer Keep personal files and apps, stop and investigate why rather than assuming your files will be preserved.

How to upgrade using installation media without deleting your files

If you have a Windows 11 USB drive or mounted ISO, start the installation while Windows 10 is running. Do not boot the computer from the USB drive if your goal is an in-place upgrade.

  1. Open the installation-media drive in File Explorer.
  2. Open setup.exe.
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Select Change what to keep.
  5. Choose Keep personal files and apps.
  6. Select Next, review the choices, and select Install.

This is different from booting from the USB drive. Booting from installation media starts a fresh-installation path, which can wipe the existing Windows installation and the contents of the selected drive.

When can a Windows 11 installation delete files?

You choose “Nothing”

The Nothing option removes personal files, apps, and settings from the new Windows installation. During an upgrade where you choose Nothing, Windows temporarily saves the previous installation’s files in C:\Windows.old. Microsoft says most of that folder is automatically deleted after 10 days.

Another installation, upgrade, refresh, or reset can delete the existing Windows.old folder sooner and create a new one. Do not perform another recovery operation while relying on that folder.

You select “Keep personal files only”

This preserves personal files but removes installed applications and Windows settings. You will need to reinstall programs afterward, and application-specific settings may be gone.

You use Reset this PC

Reset this PC is not the same as an ordinary Windows 11 upgrade. Its current path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start → Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC

The available file options are:

  • Keep my files: keeps personal files but removes apps and settings.
  • Remove everything: removes personal files, apps, and settings.

Cloud download and Local reinstall specify where Windows gets its reinstall files. They do not determine whether personal files are kept. That decision is made separately with Keep my files or Remove everything.

Reset does not create a Windows.old folder that you can depend on for recovery. If the PC is encrypted, obtain the BitLocker recovery key before resetting.

You perform a clean installation

Booting from Windows 11 installation media and installing a fresh copy can erase the existing Windows installation and hard-drive contents. A clean installation removes more than personal files: it also removes installed apps, manufacturer customizations, and changes made in Windows Settings.

Back up files to external storage or verify that they are synchronized to OneDrive before using this method.

What to do before upgrading

  1. Copy important files to another location. Use an external drive, network storage, or a properly synchronized cloud service.
  2. Check OneDrive synchronization. A Microsoft account alone is not a complete backup of files stored locally. Confirm that important files have finished syncing.
  3. Export application data. Browser profiles, email archives, game saves, password databases, and specialist application files may require their own backup procedure.
  4. Record recovery information. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, save the recovery key somewhere outside the PC.
  5. Keep the computer connected to power. An interruption during installation is more dangerous than a normal completed upgrade.
  6. Check the Setup choice. Before installing, verify that Keep personal files and apps is selected.

Files can appear missing even when they were not deleted

After upgrading, a file may be in a different location, hidden, or absent from the search index. Before concluding that it was erased, search the entire computer:

  1. Right-click Start and select File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Enter the file name in Search This PC.
  4. Right-click a result and select Open file location.

To show hidden and system files in Windows 11, go to Start → Settings → System → Advanced, expand File Explorer, and turn Show hidden and system files on.

If search produces incomplete results, open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Search → Advanced indexing options → Advanced. Under Troubleshooting, select Troubleshoot search and indexing.

Check OneDrive before assuming files were lost

OneDrive files may be online-only or may not have been synchronized to the PC at the time of the upgrade. Check OneDrive on the web and in File Explorer. Files already stored in OneDrive remain available through OneDrive even if the OneDrive application is reinstalled; reinstalling the application triggers a full synchronization.

Be careful with similarly named applications. The Microsoft Store OneDrive app is for viewing OneDrive and does not provide the same backup and synchronization function as the OneDrive desktop application.

Can you go back to Windows 10?

After an upgrade, Windows may provide a rollback option at:

Start → Settings → System → Recovery → Go back

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In most cases, this option is available for about 10 days. It keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made after the upgrade.

Rollback depends on recovery files remaining on the PC, including Windows.old and $Windows.~BT. It may also require the USB drive used for the upgrade. User accounts added after the upgrade must be removed before rollback can proceed. Because these files can be deleted, Go back is not a permanent backup or an unlimited recovery option.

Windows 10 support has ended

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC continues to run, but Microsoft no longer provides the normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Before deciding to remain on Windows 10, check whether your device has another supported security arrangement and whether it meets Windows 11 requirements.

FAQ

Does upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 delete personal files?

A normal in-place upgrade should not delete them when Setup is left at Keep personal files and apps. Always verify that choice at Ready to install and back up important data first.

Does Windows 11 upgrade delete installed programs?

Not when Keep personal files and apps is selected. Programs are removed with Keep personal files only, Nothing, a clean installation, or Reset this PC → Keep my files.

What is the difference between Keep my files and Keep personal files and apps?

Keep my files is a Reset this PC option: it preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. Keep personal files and apps is the normal in-place upgrade option and preserves files, installed apps, and settings.

How long do files remain in Windows.old?

Microsoft generally retains most of Windows.old for 10 days after an upgrade. Another upgrade, reset, refresh, or installation can delete it sooner.

Will reinstalling OneDrive delete my files?

Files synchronized to OneDrive remain available through OneDrive, and reinstalling the desktop app causes a full sync. Check synchronization status before upgrading; a Microsoft account by itself is not a complete backup of unsynchronized local files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Windows 11 does not normally delete files during a standard Windows 10 in-place upgrade. Start Setup from the running Windows installation and confirm Keep personal files and apps at Ready to install → Change what to keep. Back up important files anyway, and treat clean installations, Reset this PC, Nothing, and Windows.old recovery as separate, higher-risk situations.
