If you completed a purchase of an Xbox digital game, it remains associated with the Microsoft account that bought it after the sale ends. The sale changes the price offered to new buyers; it does not, by itself, undo a completed purchase.
What happens when the sale ends?
A digital game you bought outright remains an entitlement on the purchasing account. Microsoft explains that an entitlement is a customer’s right to access and use a digital product, and that Microsoft Store purchases and redemptions create entitlements tracked by its collections service. Microsoft’s Xbox documentation on entitlements does not specifically discuss sale expiration, but its account-based purchase model means the end of a promotion does not remove a completed purchase.

A game accessed through a subscription
Subscription access is not the same as buying the game. Microsoft’s entitlement documentation includes subscription-enabled access, but that does not mean the game remains playable if your subscription or the game’s availability under its terms ends. To keep access independently of a subscription, you would need to purchase the game separately.
A game shared on another account
Sharing lets other users access games under specific console and sign-in conditions; it does not transfer ownership of the purchase. On the purchaser’s Xbox Home console, other users can access eligible digital games. On another console, roaming access requires the purchaser to be signed in and online; other users lose that roaming access when the purchaser signs out. Why might a purchased game still fail to launch?
An account entitlement and a device license are related but distinct. Microsoft describes a license as a digital key that confirms a user’s right to access content on a device. Sign-in, internet connection, device limits, concurrency checks, and offline licensing can affect whether a game launches on a particular Xbox even when the account still has the entitlement. Microsoft’s Xbox documentation describes this distinction.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed the game.
- If you are using someone else’s console, check whether it is the purchaser’s Home Xbox or whether the purchaser is signed in and online.
- Check your connection and the console’s licensing or offline-play conditions if the game is not launching.
Can a refund remove the game?
Yes. A refund is different from a sale ending: Microsoft’s Xbox GDK refund documentation says refunds for games and durable content revoke their licenses and entitlements. Refund eligibility and processing can depend on applicable terms. Read Microsoft’s refund and chargeback documentation.
