Many models let you use the same name and password, while others create a separate name—often with a suffix. A shared name can simplify your Wi-Fi list, but it does not guarantee that your devices will switch to the strongest access point.
When should you use the same network name?
Use the same SSID if your extender supports it and you prefer to see one network name on your devices. Follow the extender’s instructions for the password and security settings; matching names alone may not be enough for the intended configuration.
That single name does not guarantee seamless roaming. A phone or computer may remain connected to the router even when the extender has a stronger signal, or stay attached to a farther access point with a weak signal. The result depends partly on how the client device handles switching.
MikroTik’s repeater guidance says to use the router’s exact Wi-Fi name, authentication type, and password for client roaming. This is configuration guidance for its repeater, not a guarantee that every combination of router, extender, and client will behave identically. MikroTik: Configuring a wireless repeater.

When is a separate extender name better?
Choose a distinct SSID if you want to identify which access point a device is using or select the extender network manually. This gives you more visibility and control, but you may need to switch networks yourself as you move around.
Names vary by product. ASUS says its extenders may use suffixes such as _RPT or _RPT5G. NETGEAR documents several possible patterns for applicable models, including the original name, _EXT, _2GEXT, _5GEXT, _2G, or _5G. The exact name depends on the model and setup. How mesh and provider-specific extenders differ
Some systems synchronize network settings rather than asking you to choose a separate name. TP-Link says its OneMesh network synchronizes settings from the router. Verizon’s Wi-Fi Extender Mini clones the Wi-Fi name and password from a Verizon Router and is designed exclusively for that router. Check compatibility before choosing a system; a provider-specific extender may not work with a different router.

How to choose and set up the network name
- Check your exact model’s instructions. Confirm that it supports using the router’s SSID, and follow its requirements for the password and security method.
- Pick the name based on how you want to connect. Use the same SSID for a simpler network list, or a separate SSID if you want to see and manually select the extender.
- Test the devices and rooms that matter. With a shared name, check whether your devices switch access points as you move. If a device stays on a weak connection, a separate name may make manual selection easier.
- Position the extender according to its instructions. For its setup process, NETGEAR recommends placing the extender approximately halfway between the router and the weak-signal area. That placement advice is for the cited NETGEAR setup, not a universal rule for every model. NETGEAR: Set up a Wi-Fi range extender.
Will matching the names make Wi-Fi faster?
No speed increase is guaranteed by choosing the same SSID. An extender is intended to improve coverage in areas with a weak signal; its effect on speed depends on the device, placement, environment, and network traffic. Verizon describes its Extender Mini as a coverage device, not a way to increase Wi-Fi speed. Verizon: Wi-Fi Extender Mini.
