No—not always. Many cameras and doorbells can still provide a live view without a paid plan, but recording and keeping event clips is often what a subscription pays for. Whether you can use a device without paying depends on its brand, model, region, and whether it stores video locally or in the cloud.
What does a subscription usually pay for?
Separate the camera’s live functions from its recording features. A device may let you watch a live feed or respond to a doorbell alert while offering no saved video history unless you subscribe. Other products can save footage locally, but that option may depend on a memory card, compatible hub, or specific model.
- Live viewing: Watching the camera feed now.
- Saved recordings: Reviewing motion or doorbell events after they happen.
- Retention and access: How long clips stay available, and whether you can download or share them.
- Extra services: Detection and other advanced features that may be tied to a particular plan.
Do not assume that a camera’s live feed, alerts, recordings, and advanced features all follow the same subscription rules. Check the exact model’s terms.

Ring: live video without saved clips
Ring says its cited doorbells and cameras can provide real-time viewing and let owners answer doorbell notifications without a subscription, but captured videos and photos are not saved. Ring says a 30-day free trial comes with a Doorbell or home Security Camera purchase, subject to an exception for customers who already have a subscription at that location. Google describes event video history as a subscription feature for Nest cameras and doorbells. eufy: local-storage models may avoid a monthly cloud fee
eufy promotes local storage and security features without a monthly fee. That makes its compatible products one possible route for avoiding recurring cloud charges, but the brand-level claim does not mean every model has the same storage, connectivity, or features. Arlo: local recording may need a hub
Arlo says an Arlo Secure subscription enables cloud recording, and that users can purchase a plan after an included trial to continue features such as cloud recording. For most of its cameras, local storage requires an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station; local recording is not available for every device. How to tell whether you can use a camera without paying
- Find the exact model and your region. Subscription terms can differ by device and country, even within one brand.
- Check what still works without a plan. Look separately for live viewing, doorbell responses, notifications, and saved clips.
- Confirm recording and retention. Find out whether motion events are saved, how long cloud clips remain available, and whether downloads or sharing are included.
- Check local-storage requirements. Verify whether the device supports it, whether it works without a cloud subscription, and whether a card or compatible hub is required.
- Read the trial-end terms. Confirm which features stop when a free trial expires and what happens to recorded history.
- Compare the full cost over time. Include the device and any local-storage hardware, plus recurring plan charges if you want cloud history.
Which option fits your needs?
