Yes—some USB 3.0 devices, cables, and ports can interfere with nearby wireless receivers operating on 2.4 GHz. The effect is not inevitable, and it does not mean USB 3.0 blocks all Wi-Fi. It is most plausible when the receiver or antenna is close to USB 3.0 hardware; moving the device or receiver is a practical first test.
Why USB 3.0 can affect 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
USB 3.0, also called SuperSpeed USB, uses a 5 Gbit/s signaling rate. Its broadband emissions can extend into the 2.4–2.5 GHz band used by 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and other wireless links. If a nearby antenna picks up that noise, the receiver’s signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity can fall, potentially reducing range or throughput.
The emissions may come from the computer’s USB 3.0 connector, the peripheral, or the cable. Proximity matters: a wireless receiver close to an emitting connector or cable is more exposed. This documented mechanism concerns 2.4 GHz; it should not be generalized to say USB 3.0 disrupts every Wi-Fi connection or affects 5 GHz in the same way. Intel describes the mechanism in its April 2012 paper, USB 3.0 Radio Frequency Interference Impact on 2.4 GHz Wireless Devices, listed in the USB-IF document library.
What the measurements show—and what they do not
In specified 2012 lab arrangements, Intel measured a nearly 20 dB rise in 2.4 GHz noise near an external USB 3.0 hard drive and about a 25 dB rise attributed to radiation from a notebook USB 3.0 receptacle. In those tests, fully shielding the tested drive reduced radiated noise by about 12 dB, while improvements to the tested notebook connector’s shielding reduced the measured noise by at least 10 dB.

Those are measurements from particular test setups, not predictions for every computer, drive, or cable. Intel’s wireless-performance demonstration used a wireless mouse and its USB 2.0 receiver dongle—not a Wi-Fi internet-throughput test. With a nearby USB 3.0 hard drive connected, the mouse worked at two feet but lagged at three and five feet. The result was similar whether the drive was actively receiving data or merely connected. Intel reported a similar effect with a USB 3.0 flash drive and said it observed a similar Bluetooth impact, without showing those results.
Moving the mouse receiver to the opposite side of the notebook with a USB 2.0 extension cable produced an “OK” response at two, three, and five feet in that test; placing the receiver directly above the USB 3.0 port produced no response. These results support testing physical separation, but do not guarantee a particular outcome for Wi-Fi or other hardware.

How to check whether USB 3.0 is involved
- Identify the affected connection. Note whether the problem is on 2.4 GHz and whether a USB 3.0 peripheral or cable is close to the computer’s wireless antenna or a wireless dongle. A slowdown or dropout alone does not prove interference.
- Unplug the USB 3.0 device, then reconnect it. Compare the wireless connection before and after. Change one condition at a time where practical so you can tell whether the USB device makes a difference.
- Move the device or receiver. Put the USB peripheral and cable farther from the antenna, or move a small wireless receiver to a more distant port. If possible, try a port on the opposite side of the computer.
- Compare with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, if available. Improvement on 5 GHz is consistent with a 2.4 GHz-specific cause, but it does not establish USB hardware as the only cause.
- Check other Wi-Fi causes if the comparison changes nothing. Intel’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide covers overlapping nearby access-point channels, local interference, adapter and router configuration, and general connectivity checks. It recommends channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz in its guidance; follow applicable local and router guidance when choosing a channel.
Fixes to try, in order
Increase distance
Move the USB 3.0 storage device and cable away from the wireless antenna, or move the wireless receiver away from the USB 3.0 port. This costs nothing and is easy to reverse.
Use another port or reposition a dongle
Try a port farther from the antenna or on the other side of the computer. For a small wireless mouse or keyboard receiver, a USB 2.0 extension cable can place the dongle farther away. Intel’s test supports this as a placement experiment, but measured mouse response rather than Wi-Fi throughput.

Try 5 GHz if your router and device support it
Because the documented noise overlaps the 2.4–2.5 GHz band, testing 5 GHz can help isolate whether the problem is specific to 2.4 GHz. A better result is a clue, not proof: other network conditions can also differ between bands.
Consider shielding only after placement tests
Intel’s tests show that shielding the tested peripheral and improving the host connector’s shielding reduced measured emissions. These are engineering-level mitigations; users generally cannot retrofit a laptop connector safely or reliably. The paper identifies a cable as a possible radiation path but does not compare retail shielded USB cables, so buying one is a less directly supported first step than changing placement.

Continue ordinary Wi-Fi troubleshooting if USB changes have no effect
If unplugging or moving the USB device makes no noticeable difference, check Wi-Fi channel overlap, adapter and router settings, and other possible interference sources before replacing hardware.

The central engineering source is Intel’s April 2012 paper. It establishes a plausible interference mechanism and reports controlled demonstrations involving a mouse receiver and Bluetooth, but it does not establish how common the effect is among current USB 3.0 devices, modern computer designs, or current wireless adapters. It also does not measure Wi-Fi internet throughput. Treat the reported figures as results from the stated test arrangements, not as expected outcomes for a particular home setup.
