Not automatically. A 24/7 YouTube stream runs through peak and off-peak periods alike, so time-of-use (TOU) pricing helps only if the home PC’s measured electricity cost across every period is lower than the cost of a VPS that can handle the stream and its outbound data. The answer depends on your tariff, the PC’s actual wall draw, the VPS plan’s compute and transfer limits, and any added home costs—not a generic electricity rate or the PC’s power-supply rating.
What TOU pricing changes—and what it does not
A TOU tariff charges different marginal energy prices at different times, and schedules may also vary by season. Because a continuous stream cannot avoid expensive hours without going offline, calculate the home PC’s energy cost separately for each rate period, then add those costs. Check your current utility tariff for fixed charges, minimum bills, demand charges, or tier effects that could alter the comparison. NIST describes time-varying rates whose schedules can differ by time of day and season (NIST).
Use the marginal energy charge that applies to the added electricity, not a generic national rate. If the PC would be on anyway, count only the power attributable to streaming; if it would otherwise be off, count the full measured system draw.
Calculate the home PC’s streaming electricity cost
Measure the whole system at the wall
Run the actual encoder and stream workload and measure the computer’s average wall draw over representative periods with a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Do not use the power-supply label, a peak reading, or a generic desktop estimate as a substitute. A measurement guide recommends using actual power draw and your own electricity rate (U.S. Department of Energy).

Compare the full costs on equal terms
Compare both options over the same billing period and include the costs that would actually change because of your choice.
- Home PC: measured incremental or full-system electricity, material extra cooling, any new or replacement equipment, and a broadband upgrade if one is needed. Separate existing sunk costs from new costs.
- VPS: the monthly price of a plan with enough compute and memory for the actual encoder workload, plus any outbound-transfer overage. A continuous video stream sends data from the server to YouTube, so transfer terms matter alongside the sticker price.
- Operations: consider who will configure, monitor, and recover the stream, as well as each option’s exposure to home-power or connectivity outages.
There is no universal savings figure: the result changes with your tariff, measured watts, streaming settings, VPS region and transfer rules, and whether the home PC is already running.

Check that the VPS can sustain the stream and its data
A low advertised VPS tier does not establish that it can encode a particular resolution and frame rate reliably. Test the actual workload on the chosen plan before relying on it. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 14 Mbps for 4K/30fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p/60fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p/60fps; these are recommendations, not requirements for every creator. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart (YouTube encoder settings).

A current Lightsail price example—not a suitability guarantee
Amazon Web Services lists a Linux/Unix public IPv4 Lightsail bundle at $5 USD/month on its pricing page accessed in 2026. The listed bundle has 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer (AWS Lightsail pricing). This is a price example, not evidence that the entry plan can reliably encode a specific stream. AWS says allowances can vary by region and outbound transfer beyond the allowance can incur additional charges; confirm the current terms for your region (AWS Lightsail FAQ).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision process
- Measure the whole computer at the wall while it runs the intended encoder and stream. Use representative periods rather than a peak or nameplate figure.
- Get the current utility tariff and record the marginal energy price and hours for every relevant TOU period and season.
- Calculate the PC’s variable electricity cost for each period. Count only incremental draw if it would already be on; otherwise count the full measured draw.
- Add home costs that would change: material extra cooling, new or replacement equipment, and any broadband upgrade. Keep sunk costs separate.
- Choose a VPS with plausible compute and memory capacity for the actual workload, then calculate outbound data from your stream bitrate and schedule. Check region-specific included transfer and overage rules.
- Compare the options for the same time span. If costs are close, include the value of setup, monitoring, and recovery work for whoever will manage the stream.
What can tip the comparison
- The PC already runs: streaming may add only incremental power. If it must stay on solely for the stream, its full measured draw belongs in the calculation.
- Peak-period rates are high: the continuous load still incurs those prices; an off-peak schedule cannot cover a stream that must remain live around the clock.
- VPS transfer is limited: overages can change the apparent bargain, particularly at sustained video bitrates.
- Home connectivity needs an upgrade: add that cost rather than comparing electricity alone with a VPS plan.
- Work and recovery matter: a nominally cheaper option may require more hands-on configuration, monitoring, or response to interruptions.
Or let it run in the cloud
For continuous YouTube streaming of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to running your own PC or VPS: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo pricing, then start your free day.
