Not all smart rings require a subscription. Oura requires membership for Gen3 and newer rings to access the full feature set, while Samsung says Galaxy Ring data can be viewed in Samsung Health without a subscription fee. What happens when you cancel depends on the brand—and on whether you cancel billing, close your account, or request data deletion.
Do smart rings need a subscription?
There is no single subscription rule across smart-ring brands. These documented examples illustrate the difference:

These policies should not be generalized to every ring maker or model. In particular, the cited Samsung no-fee statement is specific to its Singapore product page.
What happens to your Oura data if you cancel?
Oura distinguishes canceling membership from deleting your account. According to its membership help page, if you cancel membership but keep your account, your Oura data and account information remain saved under its privacy policy. You can download your data through Membership Hub.

What changes without an active membership
Data being retained in an account does not mean every way of accessing it remains available. Oura says Gen3 and later users without an active membership cannot access their data through the Oura API or partner apps. File downloads remain available, according to The Oura API.
Oura’s membership guidance says data remains in the app and can be downloaded through Membership Hub. Check Oura’s current help page for the precise app features available without membership; the available documentation does not establish a complete feature-by-feature list here.

How long Oura retains measurement data
Keeping an account is not a promise of indefinite retention. Oura’s Privacy Policy says measurement data, including sleep, readiness, and activity data, is stored only while the account is active, subject to legal retention obligations. That policy is relevant to account status, not just whether membership billing is active.

Canceling a recurring membership stops membership; it does not, by itself, mean you have requested account or data deletion. For Oura, account deletion is a separate action from membership cancellation. If you want to leave with a copy of your information, use the Membership Hub export before deleting the account, and follow Oura’s separate account-deletion process if you want the account removed. Oura’s Privacy Policy describes retention and legal exceptions.

Samsung’s published support instructions also describe data erasure as a separate process—not as an effect of canceling a subscription. Samsung’s US support page explains how to download or erase Samsung Health personal data. It says erasure permanently removes Samsung Health data stored on the phone or tablet, in the app, and on Samsung Health’s server; completion may take time. See Download or erase your personal data from Samsung Health. This is a US data-management instruction and does not establish that a subscription cancellation triggers deletion.
Samsung’s Singapore product page says Galaxy Ring data is transferred to Samsung Cloud connected to the account. The cited documentation therefore does not support treating that data as local-only.

- Identify the action you want: stop billing, keep access to an account, export a copy, or delete account data. These are distinct actions in the documented Oura and Samsung instructions.
- Check access after cancellation: for Oura Gen3 and newer, API and partner-app access requires active membership; file download remains available.
- Export first if you want a copy: Oura points users to Membership Hub for downloads. Samsung’s US instructions cover downloading Samsung Health data.
- Use the correct deletion controls: canceling membership is not the same as deleting an Oura account, and Samsung’s erase flow is a separate Samsung Health process.
- Confirm the current policy for your exact ring: subscription and app terms differ by product and can change. The documented policies here do not establish post-cancellation outcomes for every brand, including RingConn and Ultrahuman.
