Not always. A PCIe M.2 expansion card needs a workable way to shed heat, but that does not automatically mean it needs an added fan. For one SSD under short or intermittent workloads, a correctly fitted passive heatsink and ordinary case airflow may be enough. Sustained transfers, multiple drives, a hot-running SSD, or a poorly ventilated card location make additional airflow more worth considering. Check temperatures and performance during the workload you actually use, and follow the SSD and card makers’ model-specific guidance.
What determines whether an M.2 expansion card needs extra cooling?
There is no universal fan-or-heatsink rule for PCIe M.2 cards. The decision depends on the card’s cooling hardware, the SSD model, drive count, workload, and airflow around the card. A heatsink can spread heat away from the SSD, but it still needs moving air to carry that heat away. A fan can help in a restricted or hot location; it is not automatically necessary for every adapter.
- Card design: Some cards include a cover, thermal pads, and active cooling as part of the intended assembly. ASUS’s four-drive Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 card, for example, specifies a full-cover heatsink, top and bottom thermal pads, and a blower-style fan that can connect to a motherboard chassis-fan header for speed control. That is a design choice for this card, not evidence that every single-drive adapter needs a fan. ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 Card product page and ASUS card manual.
- Workload and drive count: Long, sustained reads or writes and multiple SSDs increase the case for more heat-spreading surface or airflow. QNAP says its four-drive QM2-4P-384 can generate significant heat, especially under sustained workloads. For a version without an active fan, QNAP suggests adding a fan or M.2 heatsinks with thermal pads; it also recommends monitoring SSD and PCIe temperatures. This guidance applies to that card and NAS environment, not all expansion cards. QNAP QM2-4P-384 guidance.
- Card location: A heatsink’s warmed air needs a path out. A card close to a hot GPU or away from the case’s main airflow may benefit from direct airflow. A 2025 HPC Systems comparison of one ASUS Gen4 card and a different adapter found the ASUS card ran hotter under that test’s load, though the report described the difference as not large. It also noted that airflow at the heatsink, nearby hot components, card location, and fan speed can affect results; this single setup is not a general ranking of cooling types. Choose a cooling approach for your setup
| Situation | Sensible starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One SSD, short or intermittent workloads, and open airflow | Use the card’s existing cooling or a passive heatsink. | Check SSD temperature and whether the thermal pad contacts the drive. |
| Sustained transfers, several drives, or a hot-running SSD | Use the card’s heatsink and consider active airflow. | Watch temperature and speed during the actual workload; check fan control and card clearance. |
| Card behind a hot GPU or in a low-airflow area | Improve airflow around the card; a fan may help. | Look at nearby heat sources, the case’s intake and exhaust path, and whether air reaches the heatsink. |
| Card already has a cover, fan, or thermal pads | Use the supplied cooling assembly as designed before adding another cooler. | Follow pad placement and fan power or control instructions, and remove protective film where instructed. |
These are practical decision heuristics based on product instructions and support guidance, not lab-tested thresholds or a guarantee for a particular SSD.
Check installation, temperature, and performance
- Read the card manual. Confirm the supported SSD count and any platform requirements. ASUS’s manual notes that the number of supported drives on its four-drive card depends on CPU and motherboard PCIe bifurcation settings. If the card has a heatsink and pads, use them in their intended positions, remove protective films, and reinstall the cover as instructed.
- Make sure the pad makes contact. The thermal pad should touch the intended SSD surface. A cover that looks substantial cannot cool the drive effectively if it does not contact it; also check that any aftermarket cooler fits under the card’s shroud and clears neighboring slots.
- Run the workload that concerns you. Monitor the SSD’s reported temperature during a representative transfer or other sustained task, and note whether performance drops as the drive heats up. QNAP recommends monitoring SSD and PCIe temperatures for its QM2 card. Do not apply one temperature cutoff to every SSD: limits and throttling behavior vary by model.
- Adjust the cooling only if the setup calls for it. If temperature-related performance loss appears, or the card sits in stagnant, hot air, improve airflow across the heatsink or consider a compatible fan. If the existing assembly is correctly installed and the drive performs as needed under your workload, an added fan may not be necessary.
Tom’s Hardware reported in 2026 that only 6 of 20 tested motherboard M.2 heatsinks made full contact with its test module. That finding is about those motherboard heatsinks, not PCIe expansion cards, but it underscores why contact is worth checking rather than assuming a heatsink is doing its job. The report also identifies long transfers and PCIe 5.0 drives as situations where cooling quality and thermal throttling can matter. Tom’s Hardware motherboard heatsink test.

When is an aftermarket M.2 heatsink or fan worth buying?
First check whether the card already includes a heatsink, thermal pads, or fan; use that assembly correctly before buying another cooler. Consider an aftermarket M.2 NVMe SSD heatsink with thermal pad if the card lacks suitable cooling or your measurements show a need. Verify the cooler’s dimensions, SSD compatibility, pad contact, shroud clearance, and neighboring-slot clearance. A fan is most useful when it can move air across the heatsink; simply adding a fan nearby does not guarantee airflow reaches the drive.
Noise preference and fan control can also influence the choice, but there is no standardized noise comparison across these cooling options in the sources cited here. No universal SSD temperature threshold or single best fan-versus-heatsink configuration is established. Judge the setup by the specific SSD’s specifications and its temperature and performance under real use.
