That does not mean every developer prefers Windows—or that Windows, macOS and Linux can be ranked using every poll as if it measured the same thing.
The distinction matters after Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler responded to an anti-Windows post with: “This is click bait but more developers use windows than any other operating system.” The remark is his view, not an official Microsoft survey result. The available figures support a narrower conclusion: Windows led one multi-select survey of reported use, while polls of Gergely Orosz’s audience showed a different mix.
What did the Microsoft engineer say?
Windows Latest reported on October 5, 2026, that Fowler was responding to an X post reading “life is too short to support windows users.” Fowler’s reply, reproduced by the publication, was: “This is click bait but more developers use windows than any other operating system.” The wording is a pointed response to a provocative post, not a claim backed in that exchange by a Microsoft study.
To assess the factual part of the statement, it helps to distinguish reported operating-system use from preference. Someone can use Windows at work, run Linux tools inside Windows, and prefer macOS for personal projects. A poll asking which system someone uses to build software also need not measure the same thing as a survey asking which operating systems they use.

What does the 2025 developer survey say?
Windows Latest reports the following Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey figures for professional developers’ operating-system use:

These are reported as survey results, not as mutually exclusive market shares: respondents could choose more than one operating system, and WSL had its own entry. A developer who uses Windows and WSL could contribute to both figures. The percentages therefore should not be added together, and the separate WSL and Linux entries make a simple Windows-versus-Linux comparison misleading.

On that measure, Windows was selected more often than any individual listed alternative. It is reasonable to say Windows was the leading reported OS in these figures; it is not reasonable to turn them into a claim that nearly half of all developers use Windows exclusively or prefer it. Windows Latest’s account is the source for these figures; the underlying survey page was not independently examined for this report.
Why do other polls favor macOS and Linux?
Windows Latest also reported two 2026 polls conducted by Gergely Orosz of The Pragmatic Engineer. They asked members of his audiences about the operating system they use to build software:

Those results do not contradict the Stack Overflow figures so much as answer a different question with different respondents. Orosz characterized his audience as more startup- and Big Tech-oriented than the industry overall. His polls are useful evidence about those audiences, but they are not representative estimates of developers worldwide, and their results should not be compared directly with the multi-select Stack Overflow survey as if the methods were identical. Windows Latest’s September 22, 2026 report is the source for the poll figures; the original poll posts were not independently examined here.
Why developers choose different operating systems
Windows
Windows can be a practical fit for developers building Windows software, working with Visual Studio or .NET and C#, developing games, or using employer-provided enterprise systems. These are use cases, not a rule that Windows is best for every developer.

macOS and Linux
Some developers favor macOS or Linux for Unix-oriented command-line tools and workflows. Windows Latest describes Unix tooling as a draw for some web, cloud, backend and AI developers; ITPro’s interviews likewise include developers who value command-line or POSIX compatibility and a consistent Unix-like terminal environment. These reports describe reasons expressed by particular developers, not a universal preference.
WSL: Linux tools on a Windows machine
Windows Subsystem for Linux lets people run Linux environments and tools on Windows. That can make Windows a workable host for development that relies on Linux commands without requiring the developer to use a Linux desktop as the main operating system. It also explains why a survey can record Windows and WSL use for the same respondent. WSL is an environment within Windows, not simply a fourth, mutually exclusive desktop choice.

Workplace and hardware constraints
Operating-system choice is not always a free preference. ITPro’s interviews include developers discussing managed corporate computers, system consistency and the limits of employer-controlled setups, alongside varied opinions about tools such as Visual Studio. The machine an employer supplies, the software a project requires and the team’s supported environment can matter as much as personal taste.

- Check what was measured. “Uses,” “primary operating system,” “prefers,” and “uses to build software” describe different things.
- Check who answered. A broad developer survey and a poll of a particular publication’s social-media audience do not represent the same population.
- Check whether multiple answers were allowed. If respondents can select several systems, the percentages are not exclusive shares and may total more than 100%.
- Check how Linux is counted. Native Linux and Linux tools running through WSL are distinct entries in the reported Stack Overflow figures, even though one person can use both.
ITPro’s interviews with more than a dozen programmers, engineers and developers add useful context about individual choices, but interviews are qualitative reporting, not a measure of how common each preference is.
