Yes. A meteor can explode high in the atmosphere and still hurt people on the ground: the blast wave can break windows and send glass flying. In the 2013 Chelyabinsk airburst, NASA reports more than 1,600 people were injured, mostly by broken glass, even though the object burst about 14 miles above the ground.
How can an explosion in the sky cause harm on the ground?
An airburst releases energy into the atmosphere. Its pressure wave travels outward and can reach the surface, where it may break windows, damage buildings, or cause other harm. NASA’s technical overview explains that airbursts and ground impacts can both produce damaging blast waves; heat can also ignite fires. A meteor that explodes in the atmosphere is not the same as an object striking the ground, though either event can have consequences below.
The danger varies with factors such as the event’s energy, burst altitude, distance, and the people and buildings in its path. A bright fireball alone does not establish that a damaging blast will follow, and the available evidence does not provide a universal threshold for injury.
What happened in the Chelyabinsk airburst?
On February 15, 2013, an object exploded over Russia’s Chelyabinsk region. NASA estimates it burst about 14 miles above the ground and released energy equivalent to around 440,000 tons of TNT. The shockwave blew out windows across more than 200 square miles and damaged buildings. NASA reported more than 1,600 injuries, mostly due to broken glass. NASA’s Chelyabinsk account

The airblast reached people on the ground about three minutes after the explosion, according to NASA’s emergency-planning report. That delay matters: seeing the flash does not mean the pressure wave has already passed. People who turn toward the light may still be near windows when the blast arrives. NASA’s 2021 report gives an approximate injury count of 1,500, so the total is best understood as an estimate rather than an exact tally. NASA’s emergency-planning report
Surviving fragments also fell: NASA estimated that 4,000 to 6,000 kilograms of meteorites reached the ground. That confirms some material survived the airburst, but NASA identifies broken glass as the dominant reported injury mechanism; the fragment estimate is not evidence that falling meteorites caused most injuries. How does Chelyabinsk compare with Tunguska?
The 1908 Tunguska event demonstrates that an atmospheric explosion can devastate a large area without a documented ground impact. NASA describes an estimated object about 50 meters across and destruction of about 2,000 square kilometers of forest. The region was sparsely inhabited, and NASA’s emergency report notes no documented fatalities there. The scale of forest damage does not translate directly into a prediction of casualties in a different place: population and buildings below the burst strongly affect the outcome.
Chelyabinsk and Tunguska are two observed cases with very different settings and consequences, not a formula for forecasting every event. NASA researcher Lorien Wheeler cautions: “Because there are so few observed cases, a lot of uncertainty remains about how large asteroids break up in the atmosphere and how much damage they could cause on the ground.” NASA on uncertainty in asteroid breakup

What determines the risk to people below?
- Energy and object size: Larger or more energetic events can produce more consequential effects, but size alone does not specify the damage at a particular location.
- Burst altitude and distance: Where the object breaks up and how far people are from the resulting pressure wave affect what reaches them.
- Exposure: Windows and buildings can shape the injuries and damage. In Chelyabinsk, broken glass was the principal documented injury mechanism.
- Population and surroundings: A sparsely inhabited forest and a populated area can experience very different human consequences even when both suffer extensive physical damage.
- Airburst versus impact: An airburst deposits energy in the atmosphere; an object that reaches the surface creates a distinct impact scenario that can damage the area around the impact site.
NASA Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson said Chelyabinsk “drew widespread attention to what more needs to be done to detect even larger asteroids before they strike our planet.” NASA’s Chelyabinsk account
