Sometimes, but a lighter gaming mouse is not a guaranteed aim upgrade. In a laboratory target-acquisition task, 72 players were faster and more accurate with 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with a 100 g mouse. A separate study of 16 professional players found no statistically significant performance difference between 80 g and 87 g mice. The results suggest weight can matter, but its effect depends on the task and the size of the difference.
What the studies found about mouse weight
A target-acquisition task favored mice under 100 g
A 2022 study by Toth and colleagues tested 72 video game players on a laboratory target-acquisition task relevant to first-person shooters. Participants completed the task 4% faster and 9% more accurately with 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with a 100 g mouse. PubMed’s record of the study and its Applied Ergonomics abstract describe the findings.
That result shows an advantage for the tested lighter-than-100 g conditions in that task. It does not show that every player will aim better with a lighter mouse, that the same percentages apply in live matches, or that reducing weight indefinitely keeps improving performance. The study does not establish a single ideal mouse weight.
A small weight difference showed no significant effect for professionals
A 2023 study measured performance, muscle activity, movement, and preferences among 16 professional gamers using 80 g and 87 g mice. It found no statistically significant performance differences associated with those weights. The study’s International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics record describes the comparison; the UC Berkeley study summary also provides an overview.

The two studies are not contradictory: one found a difference between its 100 g mouse and a group of lighter mice in a laboratory task, while the other found no significant difference between 80 g and 87 g among 16 professionals. They tested different participants, conditions, and weight comparisons, so neither result answers every player’s question.
Why weight is not the only factor in aim
Sensitivity can change accuracy and precision
In the 2022 target-acquisition study, participants were 34% more accurate and 14% more precise at lower control-display gain. This is a result from that experiment, not a universal instruction to lower your sensitivity: the right setting depends on your control and the game.

Fit, connection, and control matter too
The professional-player study considered more than mass, including movement, muscle activity, and preference. It also reported a lower error rate and higher overall comfort rating for wireless mice than wired mice in its connection comparison. Those findings should not be attributed to mouse weight: the study found no statistically significant weight-related performance difference between 80 g and 87 g.
There is no established best combination of weight, shape, connection, and sensitivity for everyone. A mouse that feels awkward in your hand may not suit you simply because its listed mass is low.

How to decide whether a lighter mouse suits you
- Start with the problem you want to solve. If your current mouse feels tiring or difficult to move, testing a lighter option may be useful. Do not assume a weight change will fix inconsistent aim by itself.
- Compare meaningful differences. The studies do not establish a universal cutoff. The professional-player comparison found no significant difference between 80 g and 87 g, while the laboratory task found better results with tested 50 g, 60 g, and 90 g mice than with a 100 g mouse.
- Check fit and connection as well as the number on the product page. Consider whether the shape works with your hand and grip, and whether you prefer wired or wireless. Treat these as separate choices rather than assuming one determines the effect of another.
- Keep sensitivity consistent while comparing. Since sensitivity affected results in the target-acquisition study, avoid changing sensitivity at the same time as mouse weight if you want to understand which change feels helpful.
- Judge it in your own use. Give the mouse time in the same game and settings you normally use, and pay attention to control and comfort. The available studies do not show that purchasing a lighter mouse will improve any individual player’s aim.
A listed weight is not proof of better aim
For example, MSI lists the CLUTCH GM41 Lightweight Wireless gaming mouse at 74 g. That is a manufacturer specification, not independent evidence that this model improves aim; it was not the retail model tested in the cited studies.
Use listed mass to compare products, then weigh it alongside shape, fit, connection, and your existing control preferences. The research supports treating weight as a variable worth trying—not as a stand-alone promise of better aim.
