Usually, no. A gaming phone does not automatically need a cooler or gaming triggers. Consider a cooler if sustained gaming heat is a problem; consider triggers if you want physical inputs instead of relying only on the touchscreen. Some phone-specific accessories combine cooling and buttons, but compatibility matters.

When a phone cooler is worth considering
An external cooler is a targeted option for sustained gaming heat, not a general requirement for gaming phones. The cited examples are ASUS accessories designed for particular ROG Phone models, not universal coolers for any handset.
What the ASUS temperature figures mean
ASUS says AeroActive Cooler X can lower the ROG Phone 8’s back-cover surface temperature by up to 36°C compared with the phone without the cooler, based on ASUS lab testing; the company says actual performance may vary. This is a manufacturer-reported surface-temperature comparison, not independent evidence of a particular internal-temperature or frame-rate improvement. ASUS Republic of Gamers: AeroActive Cooler X.
For AeroActive Cooler 7, ASUS claims up to 25°C lower back-cover temperature on the ROG Phone 7 and says actual performance may vary. Check fit and product-specific cautions
ASUS describes AeroActive Cooler X as an accessory for the ROG Phone 8 Series, with thermoelectric cooling, a fan, side USB-C charging, and two physical buttons. AeroActive Cooler 7 is described as the companion for ROG Phone 7 and includes active cooling, four physical buttons, and a kickstand. Those examples show why the precise phone generation and charging arrangement matter before choosing an accessory.
For AeroActive Cooler 6, ASUS says excessive cooling could create condensation and describes a built-in humidity sensor with a protection mechanism intended to prevent it. That is a caveat for this specific product, not a general claim about every phone cooler. ASUS lists compatible ROG Phone models on its AeroActive Cooler 6 product page.

When gaming triggers make sense
Triggers add physical inputs; they do not solve a heat problem. They may suit players who prefer tactile buttons or want additional control options, but their usefulness depends on the game’s controls and the player’s preference. Do not assume that every game supports them or that a generic clip-on accessory will fit every phone.
Before choosing, check how the accessory attaches, whether its buttons can be mapped to the controls you use, and whether the game allows the relevant input setup. If you want more than triggers, compare a full mobile controller as a separate option rather than assuming it will share the same fit or controls.

Some accessories combine cooling and buttons
The choice is not always cooler versus triggers. ASUS describes AeroActive Cooler X and AeroActive Cooler 6 as having both active cooling and two or four physical buttons, respectively; Cooler 7 also combines cooling with four buttons. These are phone-specific examples, so confirm the exact supported ROG Phone model and decide whether the button placement works for your game before buying.

- Open AirTriggers preferences to configure supported AirTriggers or cooler buttons.
