The setting depends on the camera, app, driver profile, and recording mode. Find the model’s audio or microphone control, turn it off, then play back a new clip to confirm there is no sound.
How to turn off audio recording on a dash cam
- Identify the exact make and model. Check the camera label, its app, or the owner’s manual; menu paths and button behavior are not universal.
- Find the audio control. Look in the camera menu and companion app for “Record Audio,” “Audio Recording,” “Voice Recording,” “Microphone,” or a microphone icon. Some devices also have a physical button or voice control.
- Switch audio recording off. Follow any instructions to save the change, reconnect the app, or reboot the camera. The setting may apply only to recordings made afterward.
- Make and play back a new clip. Check the sound in the recording itself. Do not rely on an icon alone until you know whether it shows current status or is a button that changes the setting.
- If sound is still present, check profiles and modes. The camera may use a separate setting for another driver profile, recording mode, or cabin camera.
Where the setting is on specific cameras
Garmin Dash Cam X210
On the X210, select Settings > Camera > Record Audio. Garmin says the integrated microphone records audio while video is recording and documents voice controls as another way to turn audio recording on or off. Garmin gives the same menu path for the Dash Cam 45/54/55/65W; do not assume it applies to other models or brands. Garmin X210 instructions; Garmin instructions for Dash Cam 45/54/55/65W.
Thinkware
Thinkware documents both device controls and an app setting, with steps varying by camera model. On the device, the control may be a voice-recording button or microphone control. In the app, connect to the camera, then open Dash Cam Settings > Record Settings and toggle voice/audio recording. Consult the manual for the exact model. Nexar One
In the Nexar Connect app, open More > Settings and toggle Audio recording. Nexar says the setting takes effect after the dash cam reboots and applies to recordings made afterward. Check a later drive recording to confirm the result. Nexar One instructions.

Hyundai integrated dash cam
In the 2026 Hyundai owner manual, dash-cam settings are available through Dash Cam on the infotainment screen or Setup > Vehicle > Dash Cam, including an option for whether to record sound. Settings are linked to driver profiles; the manual says sound is not recorded during continuous parked recording or time-lapse recording. These directions are for the vehicle documented in that manual, not every Hyundai or aftermarket camera. 2026 Hyundai owner manual.
Why an icon or setting may mislead
A microphone symbol may be a status indicator on one part of the screen and an action button elsewhere. Cobra says that, on the models it describes, a slashed microphone in the top status area means audio is off, while a slashed microphone in the lower action area can mean pressing it will mute the microphone. Check the manual for your camera, then verify with a new recording. Cobra’s explanation of microphone indicators.

Settings can also vary by profile or recording mode. For example, Hyundai’s 2026 manual links settings to driver profiles and specifies modes in which sound is not recorded. If audio behavior changes between drives, check which profile and mode are active rather than assuming the microphone control failed.
